THE PHUTURE - TECHNO GOES AVANT-GARDE

It's not as much me that have discovered techno music as it is techno music that has discovered me. Mind you, only 1 1/2 year ago I used to shudder at the very mentioning of the infamous T-word. Then in the car down to Roskilde Festival '97 I got to hear some of the more progressive material of APHEX TWIN and also checked him out at the festival. A month later I had a bunch of AT CD's in the shelves, and a few months later I had discovered the mighty AUTECHRE! Troy of KINGDOM SCUM also introduced me to some of the acts on the very interesting Digital Hardcore Records. Lately I've been doing some serious sniffin' around the most experimental and cutting edge fringes of the techno scene, and let me tell you, it's not at boring as it used to be. More on these acts to come...

Happening labels

Nope, I won't try to hard to make up some sorts of discogs on these artists. To many remix 12" and shit. Thorough reviews of the most interesting acts on each label will however follow soon. Until then, follow the linx.

Digital Hardcore Records

This label and the bands/artists on them may be the extreme antithesis of the progressive techno of labels like Warp, Rephlex etc. Notice the punk rock/prog rock rivalry of the seventies for reference. Techno Punk really IS the best descripion of these artists. One senses the same fuck-off/D.I.Y./fuck it up-attitudes as in the original punk labels of the late 70's creativity. If Warp is the "Rough Trade" of the techno scene, DHR is "Crass Records".

Rephlex Records

Carrying some of the most twisted of the techno artists like CYLOB, CHAOS A D and AFX.

Warp Records

The 1st label in cutting edge electro! Twin Gods APHEX TWIN and AUTECHRE dwells here!

Happening acts

INFORMATION (NOR)
- "artifacts" CD 98 (Beatservice)
The 1st time I heard this act was when I came home late one nigth/early one morning and put on MTV just to wind down to Chill-out Zone or something equally soothing. Between the computer-animated techno-flicks a most unusual video caught my attention. It basically consisted of a blurred, black surface with flashing white lines, and the trance-inducing music accompaning it was nothing less minimal. The name of the constallation was INFORMATION and a year later I finally found the "artifacts" CD with all (?) their early 12"s collected. Soft noise, extremely minimalistic rhythms, but a rich and very much alive minimalism, like the Finns in PANASONIC or something of than sort had stepped out of their cubicle and into the midnight summer air. INFORMATION breathe, pulsate, flicker... A vast and musky journey in sound that goes beyond pidgeonholes like "ambient techno" or "darktrance". They lurk in the shadows, but dignity forbids them to attack or sneak up behind you and for once you're glad they don't.

KINGDOM SCUM (USA/SWE)
...should also be mentioned in this context. More on them and their label Eerie Materials in the 90's dept.

SZEKI KURVA (UK/HUN)
- a whole bunch of tapes n' CDs n' stuff! (Follow the link for more info)
You know, there's actually a saying about this band. It goes like this:
"When DHR discovers SZEKI KURVA great things will happen. When Japan discovers SZEKI KURVA the world will never be the same."
...Aw hell, I'm making this up as I go along. But SK REALLY have the ability to conquer the world with their art. Very raw, soundbite-frenzied electro/hip-hop/techno/rap with more than a moderate dose of folk-dance samples is what is on the menu AND they have a misson: Total Destruction Of The Music Industry! Sounds familiar? Wake up, DHR-deadheads! This wonderfully, ingeniously WARPED Techno Folk Punk is the vehicle that could ride the revolutionary wing of the electro-scene into the 21st century! They started out rather primitive in '93 I think it was, and now, years later... well, they have learned to master their hardware a lot better but the concept is till the same. They must have released almost 20 tapes/CDs by now and they still haven't gotten to the point where they start repeating themselves. Salut! SK may not be as distorted and Hardcore as the most hardcore of the DHR-batch, but they share the aggression and revolutionary attitude, both in the music and the message.

This elevator is too slow for me!--->
