Originating from Karditsa (Thessaly), VEIL was formed in 2003 and began their trajectory as a Doom-laden (or “Atmospheric” as some prefer to call it) Death Metal unit as heard on their debut seven-track demo CDr “Forest Oblivion” (2005). By this time, their original vocalist Stathis Ziogas had apparently left the group, so the demo was recorded as a four-piece including Aristoteles (vocals, guitars and keyboards), Anastasis (guitars, acoustic guitars, backing vocals), Chris (guitars, acoustic guitars, backing vocals), George (drums, percussion, keyboards, backing vocals). As mentioned above, VEIL’s music at the time gravitated towards dark, Doom-influenced Death Metal, quite 1990s-sounding at times with regard to the relatively melodic guitar work and “Gothic” atmosphere – occasionally resembling a Greek answer to early PARADISE LOST/PYOGENESIS. This approach, however, would be abandoned on further recordings.
Released in 2009 and following further membership rotation, the “Blinkers Define the Spasm” EP represented a substantial stylistic and general aesthetic makeover for the band. Having condensed into a trio consisting of Chris S. (vocals, guitars), George S. (bass) and George E. (drums, vocals), the music had taken on a decidedly more modern-sounding and technical character. In addition, there appears to be a subtle hint at Black Metal in the sinister tones employed in the riffing department.
The third and final known recording by VEIL was a three-track promotional package released in 2013 featuring the same lineup as during the “Blinkers…”-era. Although in many ways a natural continuation of the previous EP, the riffs have now shed most of the Black Metal-influence, instead focusing on a more rhythmic or groove-oriented approach.
It appears if VEIL was quite active during these years, playing both gigs and festivals around Europe, yet by 2014 the band had split up, or perhaps more accurately transformed into George and Chris S’s new band DEACIDIFIED.
