Hailing from the (very) ancient city of Argos (Peloponnese), LACHRYMAL GLAND played Melodic Death Metal with a certain Gothic vibe. The band was comprised of Prokopis (vocals), Christoffer Boufas (guitars, acoustic guitars – CHRISTOFFEAR, HEDON CRIES), George (guitars), Miltos (drums) and Natassa (keyboards), while bass guitar was provided by a session player named Dimitris.
1998’s five-track demo CDr “Where Hope Lies Bleeding” – the only known work by the band – could be likened to Melo-Death Metal cross-pollinated with post-“Triarchy” era (or Goth-period) ROTTING CHRIST. Especially the latter appears to have been a strong influence on LACHRYMAL GLAND: there’s gruff vocals à la Sakis Tolis, Heavy Metal-ized rhythm riffs, melancholy-drenched melodies, etc. to which is added substantial keyboard backing. Where the Argives differ mostly from their elder countrymen is in the former’s proclivity towards up-tempo passages rather than the dignified stroll of much ROTTING CHRIST material.
LACHRYMAL GLAND eventually morphed into the more well-known Melodic Death/Doom Metal act HEDON CRIES, who released three albums before folding in 2020 (see separate band page for more information).
