DESCEND was founded in 1998 as a direct continuance of the old Athenian Thrash Metal band EPIDEMIC, featuring former EPIDEMIC trio Jimmy Morphis (vocals, bass), Nick Laskos (guitars) and Dimitris “Slaughter” Soldatos (drums) along with newcomer Harry Kondatos (guitars). With the aim of starting a new chapter in the band’s history the band left their former Teutonic Thrash/ Industrial explorations behind and began working on material that – while still retaining Thrash elements – gravitated closer to the then-popular melodic Death Metal style.
As far as we know, DESCEND signed a deal straight away with the Greek label Black Lotus Records. However, there’s actually an older promotional tape (date unknown) produced while the band still called themselves EPIDEMIC that contains early versions of some of the tracks that ended up on DESCEND’s first and only full-length release “Beyond Thy Realms of Throes” (1998). One would guess then that the change of name took place around the time of the band getting signed.
Except for their debut CD (which can be hunted down for just a few euros), an appearance on Metal Invader’s “Warzone” compilation series and at least one high-profile opening slot for DEATH during their 1998 Athens gig, DESCEND didn’t produce any further recordings and folded soon after the release of “Beyond Thy Realms…”.
