Coffin

Athens (Attica)
Thrash Metal, Death Metal
Active:
1989-unknown

With a logo like that, one would expect (or hope for?) some form of musty old school DOOM in the vein of Italy’s BLACK HOLE, but that’s not what’s on offer here. Formed in the late-1980s, COFFIN was one of many bands that sprung forth in the wake of the mighty Greek master-thrashers FLAMES. The original setting included Kostas “Gus” (vocals/bass), Angel (guitars) and Tod (drums). It was with this lineup that COFFIN recorded their first rehearsal tape, featuring two original compositions and one cover of NUCLEAR ASSAULT’s “My America”.

While the band refer to their music as Death Metal in old interviews, they’ve really got more in common with evil Thrash acts like early SODOM and KREATOR as well as the previously mentioned countrymen FLAMES. Unfortunately, we’re not sure what happened to COFFIN later on, so it might be that they moved closer to Death Metal with time. The only thing we know is that soon after the rehearsal tape was put in circulation, a fellow called Manolis “Avi” took over the vocal spot.

If you have any clue about COFFIN’s further endeavors, or are in the possession of any additional works by the band, please get in touch!
