Burial

Founded by brothers Hesperus (vocals, keyboards) and Stormrider (vocals, guitars, keyboards, programming), BURIAL was an obscure entry into the Hellenic Black Metal milieu of the early/mid-1990s. During their first stint of existence (allegedly between 1994-1997), the band released two very rare demo tapes entitled “1994 A.D.” (1994) and “Majesticus Bestia” (1997). Unfortunately, none of these tapes have surfaced during our research, so any detailed description of the actual music is out of hand. Judging by the instrumentation (guitars and synthesizers + vocals) though, it appears as if BURIAL dealt with some form of ambient/experimental Black Metal at this stage.

Following a lengthy break, the band eventually resurfaced from the crypts in 2012; rechristened as BURIAL94 and featuring the original duo of Hesperus/Rzionr Nrzfm (keyboards, vocals) and Stormrider/Volxdo Sioda (vocals, guitars, keyboards, programming) along with a new recruitment going under the tounge-wricking pseudonym Soniznt (guitars, vocals). The first fruit of the reunion was the “Conjuration of Omens” (2013) EP. Released in a very small run (5 DIY digipak copies) on the members’ own Werkstatt Recordings, “Conjurations…” saw the band adapt a style somewhere between Black Metal and Electronic/Ambient music, which some prefer to denote as Black Ambient: pitch-black psychedelic/ambient landscapes, sprinkled with various horror/occult-derived samples, tortured vocals and Black Metal-styled guitars.

As for the future, BURIAL94 is currently working on completing their first full-length album under the title “Possessed by Demons, Enlightened by Darkness”. Samples from the upcoming opus can be found on the band’s official communicative organs.
