AUTOPHAGIA was a one-man Goregrind band from Thessaloniki formed in 1997 by Angelos Hatziandreou and probably named after a song from DEAD INFECTION’s classic LP “A Chapter of Accidents”. Staying active for about ten years, AUTOPHAGIA lived up to most of the attributes normally associated with the style: massive discography, highly explicit and offensive artwork, haphazard song structures, pitch-shifted vocals, hilarious songtitles/lyrics and of course a totally non-commercial sound. Thankfully, AUTOPHAGIA adhered to the old CARCASS/DEAD INFECTION school of Goregrind rather than the sterile, faux-brutal and drum-machine blasting variant. Moreover, Mr Hatziandreou managed to make (most) of his releases sound at least relatively distinct from each other through minor adjustments of the “musical” formula.
Around the time of AUTOPHAGIA’s dissolvement, Angelos formed the Grind/Punk act PSYCHOPHARMAKA.
