Atavism

The town of Volos has spawned a fair share of underground Metal acts throughout the years (ABNORMAL FLESH GROWTH, ACID RAIN and MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE to name a few). The “most brutal band” award however must go to ATAVISM. Since 1997 – originally functioning as a duo consisting of George “Ventor” Georgalas (drums, vocals) and Stratos Pantazidis (vocals, guitars, bass) – ATAVISM has spread the gospel of caveman-ish brutal Death Metal/Grindcore.

With the demo couplet “Corpses Cataclysm” (1998) and “Craving for Flesh” (1999), George and Stratos laid down the basic template, which over the years would be further explored/molested throughout numerous split releases and live recordings – some of which featured additional guitarists Jim Samaras, Leonidas Douras (ABDOMINAL FLESHGROWTH, CONVICTED, BEDLAM, etc.) and since 2013 Manos “Ego Death” Michaelides (MORBIDITY, NECROMANCY, INTERNAL DECADENCE, etc.) Luckily, ATAVISM follows the old school path of early MORTICIAN (US), which translates into a gratifyingly a bass-heavy sound built around rudimentary riffs (sometimes just one-chord rhythmic patterns), abdominal vokills, and (luckily) flesh-and-blood drumming - all spiced up with the obligatory horror/gore samples.

In addition to their vast discography (although no studio full-length albums yet that we know of), ATAVISM has shared the stage with many of the country’s most brutal acts throughout the years and seem to still be going strong in that department.
