But seriously, why did this copy sell for only 1/5 of the previous one, only because of the missing sleeve??
Missing sleeve AND missing insert plus the 'special seller fee' for Rattlehead :)
Yeah, it's a ridiculous price gap. See my thread 'The Price of Picture Sleeves' for more on this phenomena. I understand that a copy with sleeve and insert is worth more than a copy without, but I don't get why the difference is so huge. I could easily see a 50% price drop, but often it's more like a 75-90% price drop. The MdS dropped 80%, and several sleeveless copies of this single have sold for around $150, a 90% drop (and just so no one thinks the drop is inflated by Rattlehead's copy selling for a crazy price, there's at least 2 other copies archived on popsike selling for 800-900 GBP, which is about what Rattlehead's copy brought).
I've seen the Baseline 7" drop 90% with a photocopied sleeve and the Ricochet 7" drop 93% w/ a copied sleeve instead of the original (which half the copies came without in the first place). The conclusion is that the cover is worth much more than the actual record.

Perhaps because everyone already has the music in digital form?

I considered that, but everyone also has high-res scans of the pic sleeve and inserts, so that logic doesn't really hold up. In the old days, the sleeves were a critical source of information, but now most of the data and images are readily available online, same as the songs themselves.

I'm not anal for cover conditions, but I want at least a cover. And I can't stand to not have a lyric insert or anything like that which was included initially. If I want a second copy for listening and keeping the better for collection only though, (if it's THAT great to shell another 250$ out that is), a "record only" record would be ok for me.

No I don't think this is the case, the sleeve without the records wouldn't sell for more than 1/5 of the usual price either. I think it's simply 'cause this is not complete, when buying such an expensive record like this one you want it complete, I know I would anyways

It would be a great idea to buy all parts separately to save money but I wouldn't settle with just one part. I myself wouldn't pay more than ~250$ for only the vinyl or the sleeve so I just mean that I can see why no one else seem to be willing to do that either.

Absolutely. Like that Hammeron sleeve I got for $0.99 recently. (If anyone knows of a loose vinyl, let me know!)

this is absolutely the truth in collectibles.

I collect books and magazines in addition to records.

take a look at this book for $850:
http://cgi.ebay.com/TERROR-BY-NIGHT-CHR ... dZViewItem

Without jacket it can be found for around $20-$30 if you look around for awhile.

So as you can see it is just a little more expensive complete....

According to one of the greatest Slovenian metal vinyl collectors (not metal, though), the worth of his top 20 vinyls - only for the sleeves, LPs not included in it! - is 50.000€ ...
