The distances between major cities is so great that a band from San Antonio wouldn't necessarily be influenced by what was happening in Houston or Dallas.
I'm surprised more haven't mentioned Karian with S.A. Slayer's original singer Chris Cronk. He also sang on the great Talisphere demo.
Some really great stuff has already been mentioned. Here are some favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:
ACRIDITY
ARCANE
BAD HEAVEN
BARON STEELE
BASILISK
BOSS TWEED
ETERNAL FATE
MEDDALLION
MERCYNARY
MOX NIX
VALKYRIE
etc, etc....

Meddallion was from San Antonio & they recorded a 2 song demo in 1986. Never "officially" released or widely circulated. Cool NWOBHM influenced traditional metal.

Yes, you are right! It's a more power than progressive metal album. But I understand pure US metal in a different way... Great observation!
Perhaps the only metal band from Texas with no reference anywhere on the internet....METAL MERCHANT! There some collectors that have the 2-3 known copies but I guess they keep information and music from themselves!
Just listening to the Drive album 'Characters In Time' through vibrations of doom. Damn good stuff. Cheers for pointing them out. I agree that the 'progressive' tag is a little odd though. Just good solid US metal!
