MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE was a Heavy Metal band from Volos – a city brimming with underground Rock activity in the early 1990s. Although seldomly mentioned these days, MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE was actually one of few bands within their style of choice who managed to put out a vinyl release during the Black/Death heydays of the early-to-mid 1990s. At the time of the recording their sole EP release Land of Loonity (1992) members included: Apostolis Valasas (vocals – THE STAINS), Kostas Papapanagiotou (guitars), Andreas Kostopoulos (bass) and Giannis Antonopoulos (drums).
Issued by the local Enema label (who also released two vinyls by vocalist Apostolis Valasas’ Garage Rock band THE STAINS), Land of Loonity presents four tracks of rather varied underground Heavy Metal, at times bordering on Speed Metal (especially valid for the opening song “Taste of Fear”). In addition to their knack for writing memorable riffs/melodies, one of the things that set MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE apart was their blending of Heavy Metal with the stylings of contemporary Greek Garage Rock, arriving at a sound that diverged from traditional 1980s Heavy Metal without loosing their ways into Alternative Rock or similar routes.
