In addition to hosting one of the country’s most fertile Death Metal scenes in the 1990s, Thessaloniki also spawned a handful of Black Metal acts. Interestingly however, many of the Salonican bands didn’t sign up for the typical Hellenic Black Metal sound. On the one hand, you had the unholy trinity of CTHONIUM, OSCULUM INFAME and TWILIGHT who went for either the Nordic or “Bestial” (BLASPHEMY/BEHERIT) style, and on the other hand the more “clean” and melody-centered groups like CONSECRATION and CREATION’S ODE. Then, somewhere in the middle, there were bands like DEATHFOG, who tried to combine rawness with semi-melodic passages.
There’s not much background information to be found on DEATHFOG, except for the brief credits found in the j-card accompanying their sole eponymous demo tape. The lineup included Christos Fog (vocals, bass), Alexis (guitars) and John (drums, percussion). As mentinoed above, DEATHFOG didn’t sound like your typical Hellenic Black Metal band, nor its Northern counterpart. Instead, one would have to grab for references such as the early works of continental groups like Belgium’s ENTRHONED, although DEATHFOG sounds considerably more primitive than the Belgians. Quite basic stuff in other words, but with enough melody to make the songs at distinguishable from each other.
