Carrion

Athens (Attica)
Black Metal
Active:
1994-1997 (as CARRION), 1997-2004 (as VIRUS OF KOCH), 2009-present (as VIRUS OF KOCH)

Formed by mainman Thomas “Van Gimot” Gisdakis (vocals, guitars, bass – AGOS, ACHERONTAS, STUTTHOF, etc.) back in 1994, this single-demo effort band was in fact an early incarnation of Black Metal veterans VIRUS OF KOCH (who’s still going strong to this day). However, whereas VIRUS OF KOCH would venture into melodic territories, CARRION offered gratifyingly harsch, semi-chaotic Black/Death with a near-like psychedelic approach to audial texture.

The band’s sole release “Experience” (1997) contains only one track, but just as with the majority of the early VIRUS OF KOCH material, “When Fears Comes By” [sic] is quite lengthy (crossing the seven-minute mark). Rather than adhering to Hellenic BM tradition, CARRION brought SARCÓFAGO-styled grinding percussion (courstey of Fotis Algerinis) crossed with icy tremolo-picked guitars and tormented, ear-piercing shrieks. Interestingly, the music is also relatively bass-heavy in all its trebly-ness.
