Burial Hordes

Athens (Attica)
Black Metal
Active:
2001-present

[Burial Hordes] was formed with a central purpose and philosophy to be a poison and a wound on the religion body /society while in musical level we want to explore different paths, totally in the contrary of the established Greek Black Metal traditional sound which had dominated the scene those days.
Referring to the philosophical aspect of the band, I have the feeling that it is an obvious answer. It is well known how strong is the influence of Christianity in the Greek society in all the levels for centuries now.

This brief quote, taken from an interview conducted by Necrosphere Webzine in 2007, quite poignantly sums up the essential characteristics of the Athenian Black Metal band BURIAL HORDES: a direct attack on the established order through violent and confrontational, yet explorative music which in many ways represents a stylistic deviation from the template laid down by the original Hellenic Black Metal bands. The latter, however, should probably not be seen as a renounciation of the genre-classics, but rather as a way to bring new life (or death?) to a scene that had last its original impetus. In the case of BURIAL HORDES, this translated into a deliberately distancing from the emblematic “warm” and melodic Hellenic sound, replaced by grim and feral characteristics more commonly associated with Northern European Black Metal.

Inspired by iconic bands such as BATHORY, VENOM and POSSESSED, BURIAL HORDES was inaugurated in 2001 and released their first demo CDr “Entering the Untrodden Forest” later the same year. Created by an early lineup featuring perpetual mastermind Dionysis “Necrotormentor” Dimitrakos (guitars, bass – ENSHADOWED/NOCTERNITY ENSHADOWE, MERCILESS CRUCIFIXION, VOMIT CHURCH, etc.) along with Nightspirit (vocals) and Adrahil (drum programming – ENTHRONED SERPENT), “Entering…” shows the band in their most “Nordic” phase, with bone-chilling tremolo riffs, hypnotic (and digitally generated) percussion and a deliberate coldness in terms of atmosphere. Among the four songs we are treated to an early version of the track “Beyond Thy Mortal Horizon”, which would later be re-recorded for the band’s first full-length album a few years down the road.

Following a handful of live performances in the wake of “Entering…”, a follow-up demo was issued two years later, entitled “Mors Luminis” (2003). By then, the band had adopted a new lineup which included previous members Necrotormentor (guitars) and Nightspirit (vocals) along with Psychaos (guitars, bass – DEAD CONGREGATION, ENSHADOWED, Παροξυσμός, etc.) and Erevos (drums). The new material showed a decisive step away from the more introspective/mystic aspects of the debut towards a harscher and combative style with some gratifyingly sinister riffing from the hands of Necrotormentor. In many ways, “Mors Luminis” and the subsequently released promo “Bestial Bloodwar” can be viewed of as the rudimentary template for the band’s next couple of releases, even though the latter once again coincided with a substantial lineup overhaul with the arrival of long-time members Cthonos (vocals – RAVENCULT) and Impaler (drums – AEOLIAN FIRE, ENSHADOWED, MERCILESS CRUCIFIXION, etc.) as replacements for Nightspirit and Erevos respectively.

After the release of 2005’s “Total Gathering of Supremacy”, a split-tape with Greek compades ESCHATON consisting of the same material as the “Bestial Bloodwar” promo, BURIAL HORDES recorded their first full-length album in late 2005 with the descriptive (ahem) title “War, Revenge and Total Annihilation” (2006) featuring the same lineup as on “Bestial Bloodwar”. The CD, originally released through the Italy’s The Oath and Aussie label Asphyxiate Recordings, represents the crowning achievemnt of early BURIAL HORDES.
