CULT OF THE UNDERDOG
Episode 12 : The 1st Day Of Forever (Aug 2023)

Image

The mere fact that 'The 1st Day Of Forever' exists at all is something of a minor miracle, never mind the fact that it looks like i'll actually get it uploaded to Mixcloud on schedule.
My ageing PC decided that it was just too difficult to output my 1st attempt at this episode & crashed, meaning i lost the damn thing &, (after extensive ruthless deletion of unneccessary files & a hard-drive de-frag), then had to reassemble the whole episode from scratch based purely on my memory of the original choice of tracks & running order.
Ultimately i feel like this 2nd attempt actually improves on my original try, so perhaps all the extra hassle was (almost) worth it.
Let your ears be the judge.

If you missed any of the previous episodes you can catch up here:

Starting at about 5 minutes in was a very easy one: Bashful Alley - Running Blind, though that rip sounds really dire!

Yup! Quite a recent discovery for me, but a rather good one.

Glad you enjoyed it tbieri. Well spotted on both counts, I thought Yellow would stump everyone.

Might be because i chose the demo recording over the more familiar version from the 45. It just edges it for me in terms of energy & atmosphere, despite the rawness of the recording.
A very repectable rate of recognition gentlemen, nearly a quarter of the songs named on day one. Over to you Noisenik & Khnud...

There, in the middle of selection, are SILVERHEAD - Rolling With My Baby. Before that, there is killer instrumental which I can not put title on, sadly.

Concerning the cool instrumental i was thinking at Frank Marino.

Yeah, that's Silverhead alright, but the instrumental isn't Frank Marino. Now you've said that i do hear a lot of similarities in the way the guitarist phrased his parts, though Frank's style is a bit different in terms of tone. Glad to hear you both enjoyed that one though, it's definitely one of my better recent discoveries. So many cool twists & turns & unexpected shifts in tempo & mood.

Ridiculous I did not catch that. Excellent album that I've even listened to as recently as in the last few months.

05.
06. Yellow - Palaa (from the 'Keltakuume' LP (1975))
07.
08.
09.
10. Silverhead - Rollin' With My Baby (from the 'Silverhead' LP (1972))
11.

Okay, i've given a few of the harder ones in order to try & stimulate some more guesses, before i finally reveal all. Does this help?

01. Gordon Franks - Father Dear Father Theme (from the 'Father Dear Father' TV series) (1968)
02. Baltik - Leslie Briggs (Cult Of The Underdog Theme) (from the 'Baltik' LP (1973))
03. Ram Jam - Hurricane Ride (from the 'Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Ram' LP (1978))
04. Bashful Alley - Running Blind (Demo Version) (from the 'It's So Big You Gotta Grin To Get It In' Demo (1980))
05.
06. Yellow - Palaa (from the 'Keltakuume' LP (1975))
07.
08.
09. Song - Medicine Man (from the 'Album' LP (1970))
10. Silverhead - Rollin' With My Baby (from the 'Silverhead' LP (1972))
11. Patto - You, You Point Your Finger (from the 'Hold Your Fire'LP (1971))
12.
13.
14. Badlands - The River (from the 'Dusk' LP (1993))
15.
16. The Lewd - Magnetic Heart (from the 'American Wino' LP (1982))
17.
18. Ivor Cutler - Bicarbonate Of Chicken (from the 'Jammy Smears' LP (1976))

BTW, the Song LP sadly doesn't contain anything else that sounds like the excellent 'Medicine Man' instrumental. 'Meatgrinder' is the one other song that just might appeal to open minded Corro-ites, though it's quite a different proposition.

Graham, thanks for adding these in advance, but that's not a major problem, it is that I don't have time to listen to it. But even in a dream I couldn't imagine Ivor Cutler being part of the mix.

I enjoy that Barnabus record. Their unusual sound & clever arrangements help me see past their lyrical 'message' for the most part. The rest of the China Blue album is disappointing to me, but 'Glasses Hi' is such a great little tune. Kinda sounds like Speranza-era Riot with a touch of Klaus Meine in the vocals for good measure.
