"Library-Metal"? (Slugs 1988 movie band playing at the party)

Anyone seen Slugs (1988)? Great horror movie with a scene at an outdoor party towards the end where a band sort of like Demon is playing, anyone know who the hell that band is? Much like in Battle for the Lost Planet (a band called bomber) and Dr. Alien (A band called Sex Mutant) this movie has a band in it playing some music that I can't find any info on anywhere.

Frankly I've gotten more and more intrigued by the fact that someone wrote a Heavy Metal tune for a library-record, so I went and ordered a copy. This is 100% pure Metalploitation = DaN collection-fodder! To be continued....

Basically, records of "stock-music" or sounds that is made specifically to be used as background or mood-enhancers for s films, adds, radio shows etc... This is "prefab" music on a whole other level than regular mainstream crap...

Stock music does not refer to any specific genre of musical composition." Very popular in the 70's, when most of it was also recorded. Largely unobtrusive, so literally music to read to.

Delving into library music can be quite a nice tide. Thanks to George Romero's use of it on Dawn of the Dead I've went through a library music rabbit hole a few years ago and it was pretty fun. It's crazy how expensive they can be though.

Absolutely! I've got a liking for 70s funk music & a lot of the reason for that is the library music used on tv cop shows in my youth, so the wider availability of olde library music in the CD/digital age has been an exciting development.
This playlist of songs used in 'The Sweeney' TV series makes my inner child grin from ear to ear. It's surprising just how much funk was in a bunch of middle aged white guys with names like Keith, Duncan etc.

Fans of electronic music seem to be more familiar with this genre, I've noticed. Speaking of fond childhood TV memories, here's a piece from a record from the same label as "Chartbusters":




Finding more HM'ish tracks from albums like this will be HARD I think, since they are seldom tagged with this genre on discogs or elsewhere and there is soooo much material and numerous releases out there. Still I think I've now been cursed with the habit of turning these LPs over when and wherever I come across them, just in case..

Well, there's lots of vintage electronica to be found since it was cheaper to make library music with snyths than having a full band/orchestra. That being said, as bigfootkit pointed out, there's also a lot of funky and jazzy stuff from the 70s/80s and you can even find some interesting proggy tunes without all the aimless jamming (which is what turns me off the most from that genre).

That Chocky theme is really evocative of that era, even though i was just too old to have watched the show when it was originally on TV. I do remember my younger sister was obsessed with it at t time though.
I'd imagine the odds would be stacked heavily against finding anything vaguely Metallic just by randomly working through whatever library LPs surface at fairs or online, but there's a whole other community of crazy collectors/DJs who are deeply into library music who might be able to point the way to some nuggets (should any exist).
I went to college with a guy who was into remixing stuff using sampled breakbeats & he eventually became part of an online community who were really deeply into this old library music. So deeply in fact that they'd collaborate on backward engineering DIY soundtrack albums for obscure cult films by indentifying songs & cues from the movies by ear from their library music collections then sharing them online til the 'albums' were complete. And when i say 'cult' films, i mean proper old cult Kung-Fu, Blaxploitation & Porno films from the 70s.
Of course i asked him if he had found anything remotely heavy along the way & he sent me a rip of a 1978 LP from the Bruton company calld 'Heavy Rock'. It was a good listen but the title was pretty misleading as the music was mainly quite funky but fairly standard rock, usually embellished with nifty fuzz guitar. Good music, but not what i was looking for.
That was a couple of decades ago now, & we've since lost touch, but i'll try to get back in contact with him & see if he has turned up any potential fresh leads in the last 20 years or so.
