Don't know about you but ever since I added my vinyl to Discogs a few years ago, the rise of my 'collection value' has been pretty mind-boggling.

On the other hand I bought a copy of the RSD Cro-mags reissue via Discogs for €20, and the 'Lowest sold' on the release page is €25.47. So they are, probably conscious, filtering out lower priced sales to artificially raise the 'market price' for records.

They only show the 10 latest sales, perhaps that's why?

As for being rich - well define "rich".

Discogs collection value is one thing - actually getting that amount of $$ in your pocket (or in your bank account) is another. You can't pay your rent in vinyl records, and transforming a 3000+ item collection into cash is a lot of work.

I know. Besides, I can't even move myself to sell my spare copies. Have over 300 tapes and probably close to 100 records like that and they just sit there.
On the other hand, if I sell the 50 or so most expensive items from my collection I could turn that into a lot of cash with a limited amount of work.

Yeah I was obviously kidding To be honest all the money made on used records sale has always seemed to me very petty. Nickels and dimes compared tot he efforts taken, get a real job instead.

Still, it's a valid question I think. We're all slowly moving towards that point in our lives when we need to start thinking about what should happen with our collections when we're no longer around. And at that point, it's understandable to begin comparing potential profit versus effort needed to sell.

Many collectors start selling their collections in their late 60's. To me that's in about 20 years, which means I'm roughly halfway done with my collecting hobby.

I have actually started to think about exactly the scenario you describe lately and it is problematic. In the event of my shuffling off the ole mortal coil, i have three different collections that'll need to be disposed of in addition to all the usual household items.
I'd thought that my sister & her three kids could split the workload, with each of the kids taking on one of the collections whilst my sister dealt with all the day-to-day things. However, this could prove tricky as one of my nephews is into comics so he's the natural choice to take care of my comix & graphic novels, my other nephew is into music so i showed him discogs a while back in the hope that he'll dispose of my music collection wisely. So far so good, but that then leaves just my teenage niece to dispose of my collection of vintage 1970's porno mags, which is not an ideal scenario.
I think i'm gonna have to leave an emergenct key with a friend so that when the time comes they can get the smut out of here before my family arrive just to save them the headache of dealing with an almost complete run of 1970-1980 Mayfair magazines. It genuinely seemed like such an innocent kitsch hobby when i started purloining them back in the early '90's!
To get back on-topic, it might be interesting to look back through this thread from it's beginning 42 pages ago & see how the 'ludicrous' asking prices back then compare to what the same items go for nowadays.

I'm 31 and seeing how fast the world is going to shit, I'm sure by the time I'll think about that, there'll be way more important issue going on (more viruses, climatic disasters, civil wars connected to mass migration etc) than what to do with these pieces of cardboard and wax. I'm enjoying while it lasts, but that's like retirement, I don't really realistically see any peaceful future in it. (not trying to be depressing here but you know...)

It was an interesting collection to watch sell.
