Best Albums Of '80

Post by Noisenik »

This time I concentrated only on a year mentioned. Imagine that you have to choose only between bands that were »plasticly« busy in the year of the interest, and of course those you think are the most suitable to your taste(s). Don't forget the wannabees and copycats. And hidden treasures. I agree that we will probably dispute over year of release of certain items.

21 items in no particular order:

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Manilla Road - Invasion
Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Diamond Head - Lightning To The Nations
Cirith Ungol - Frost And Fire
Accept - I'm A Rebel
Judas Priest - British Steel
Quartz - Stand Up And fight
Sarcofagus - Cycle of Life
Sarcofagus - Envoy of Death
Witchfynde - Give 'Em Hell
Limelight - Limelight
Oxym - Music Power
Witchfynde - Stagefright
Tygers of Pan Tang - Wild Cat
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
Dawnwatcher - Spellbound
Gravestone - War
Vardis - 100 MPH
Paralex - White Lightning
Rush - Permanent Waves

P.S. I've chosen this year for start because there was relatively small quantity of releases published.

For me 1984 was the year that Metal reached its highest peak. Defenders of the faith, Hail to England, Sign of the hammer, Ample destruction, Gates to purgatory, WASP, Battle cry, ... and the cannons of destruction have begun, March of the saint, Cloven hoof and the list goes on forever...

I agree 1984 is also one of my faves.
You also forgot "Ride The Lightning", "Powerslave" (the best Maiden album imo) or "Stay Hungry" from the known ones and hidden jewels like Gotham City, Proud, Znowhite`s "All Hail To Thee", Medieval Steel and many others.
1980 was great, but still too "soft" for me...

imo, the best period ever for heavy metal is from year 1979 to year 1985, during this period 95 % of essential albums has been released (too numberous to list them all).
My fave years are 1983 and 1984.

I think we must make about 10 threads about each 80´s year where everyone will post his 20 faves and others opinions what you say? That will be a very multi-thread issue!!!! :D

I didn't say that 1980 is my favourite year.

I'd like - with your help - analyze the chronological aspect of musical activity. I'd take into account only one year at a thread. It is my strong belief that the quality of music can be compared only in terms of chronology. Groups releasing albums/ demos are reflecting the characteristics of the era best. Regarding time it is also smart to take into account that events happening in the all 12 months could have severe impact on the creativity of every branch of music including Metal.

Agree. I had sth like that in my mind.

I started with 1980 because it is the first year of the 80's, what else. Although I'm thinking to go little backwards (1979, 1978) after.

Bleak House - Rainbow Warrior 7''
Agony Bag - Raibies is a Killer 7''
Dragonfly - Silent Nights 12''

That's three NWOBHM releases I came to think of right now...

Scorpions - Animal magnetism
Saxon - Wheels of steel
Brats - 1980
Holocaust - Heavy metal mania EP

I'd take those plus most (though not all) of the items originally mentioned
