We all know of the bands who use too many keyboards,I'm looking at you finland haha, but seriously what are your opinions on keyboards in metal, I believe they can add some major atmosphere and dynamics, but I believe they should never be the dominant instrument in a metal band as I believe that spot is reserved for the godly guitar, don't get me wrong some bands can pull it off,but so many bands use them to the point of being weak or annoying and not even sounding like metal,I assume many of you will agree with me as old school fans but I guess we'll see.

i'm not really a big fan of keyboards in metal. they always (99% of the time) seem to ruin the atomsphere. of course, some bands are able to pull it off. those keyboards in some Hell songs are great, ...
what i really hate is modern black metal with keyboards. that kind of crap makes me sick to my stomach.

And a lot of the early KING DIAMOND was very good too!
And Geddy Lee in RUSH

Of course "keyboard-oriented rock" is a pimple on the ass of rock music, but as mentioned here some bands have managed to do something quite origininal an unique with it, where heaviness have not been compromized. In general I think it's an unnecessary addition to a Metal line-up, just like horns or a string quartet. On certain harmonic parts of certain songs it can do wonders though.
US Metal band SINFUL did some great stuff w/ a keyboard player in the line-up.

I guess the most notorious are Nocturnus. Ha Notorious Nocturnus! Kewl phrase. I think I heard 'em on Mantas - Winds of Change ... Venom - Prime Evil, too ?? or just by intros? Candlemass, Hexenhaus, Carcass - Symphonies - just for tapestry?
I guess keys are kewl if they do not sound like polyvinyl or other kind of plastic.

The early SIGH-stuff employed keys in a pretty cool and unusual way. Piano-Plinking Blacking Metal

I'm not too found of keyboards in metal, but there's one thing I can't resist : the sound of an organ Hammond !! It always reinforce the heaviness of the song.

I have to mention a band: Demon. That Watts guys was a master of his craft, going from that experimental stuff to hammond like sound to orchestration. Certainly over the top.

I'm listening to "ESP: The Future Is Now" and the keys are a welcome additions to the songs.
