To me, melodic metal means bands like Saracen and Messiah. A particular sound/style that's sometimes close to pomp rock but still very heavy metal.

agreed, nebuchadnezzar

While its very hard to define, when i think of 'melodic metal', i think of heavy metal with AOR/melodic rock/hard rock influences in songwriting i.e roughly more melody, less heavy than the average metal band. A good example for me is Mantas (Winds of change album)

That one sounded more like heavy AOR to my ears.

I just ordered that LP after listening to a song on YouTube. Very promising indeed.

I'd have to say Warbride, especially the 1989 demo...can't really be gay either as it was an all female band...

Well personally I would be somewhat confused if people were referring to Scanner as melodic metal. Yeah they have a great sense of melody but what about the full-on speed metal side of them? I guess that everyone have their own definition of melodic metal. To me it's heavy metal that's focused on using melody as the base of songstructure and usually borders with AOR/Pomp rock/Hard rock. But then again melodic metal ain't a real genre and the word itself doesn't tell much so people will have their own ideas about it.

Some excellent songs in there. The balance between melody and heaviness on that album is near perfect!

If the definition of epic metal Warlord is one of the first bands came to your mind talking about melodic metal I'm an elephant. Scanner with raw speed of the first albums? Rage of late 80's????? The definition of speed metal "Secrets in a weird world"? Execution? Perfect Man? What about Messiah Force?? I quit...

Err... ROTTING CHRIST, anyone? Very melodic and surely not gay (they went downhill since "Dead Poem" though...). :P
