Guardian Records opinions/info?

Post by Nightlock »

Been trying to find more info on this label last night without too much luck...Were they a pure N.W.O.B.H.M. label? Does anyone have index like info on this label? Why records like Hollow Ground go for $250 + and other records on Guardian only go for $25?

Anyway any info/opinions on this label would be much appreciated.

Here's a start...

Battleaxe - Burn This Town / Battleaxe single
Hollow Ground - Flying High EP
Incubus - To The Devil A Daughter LP
Lone Wolf - Leave Me Behind / High Class Hooker single
Millennium - s/t LP
Mythra - Death & Destiny EP
Satan - Kiss Of Death / Heads Will Roll single
Skitzofrenik - USA / Lonely Road single
Spartan Warrior - Steel 'n' Chains LP
Tokyo Rose - Dry Your Eyes / This Is Tokyo Rose single
Various Artists - Roksnax LP
Various Artists - Roxcalibur LP
Various Artists - Pure Overkill LP

I'm sure there are many more.

Satan, Skitzofrenik, and Hollow Ground are likely to be wallet emptiers :)

The Satan single is one of my favorite NWOBHM singles, and IMO, much better than their later work.

Heads Will Roll is defiantly a killer track, I've only got the Spartan Warrior LP so far. :(

What little info I have suggests the label was very bad at record-keeping, so TMK no one has a complete label discography or very reliable info regarding pressings for all their releases. Some of their releases are pretty easy to come buy (Incubus, Overkill compilation, Mythra EP, etc) while others are extremely rare. The label has been considered very collectable by nwobhm fans since at least the early 90s.
For the Big Three mentioned above, all 3 came with picture sleeves. For copies in great condition and with the sleeves, the Satan has been around $200 for at least 10 years and copies turn up for sale regularly. The Hollow Ground brings $450 (maybe a little more now) or about $80 without the sleeve (I've heard that as few as 50 sleeves exist). I've only seen the Skitzofrenik sold once and it went for over $500, even though it's considered much weaker musically than the other two.

Went in "okay" condition with picture sleeve about two days ago for 155 pounds I should have bid more but I'm a bit short on money at the moment.

No problem.

If you like Hollow Ground and Satan (what NWOBHM collector doesn't?) but can't afford the price of the singles, then definitely try to find the Roksnax and Roxcalibur comps.

Roksnax has 4 Hollow Ground tracks, 2 of which appear on the EP. The other 2 are as good as, if not better than, the EP tracks.

Roxcalibur has 2 Satan songs as good as the single (Oppression, The Executioner). In fact, I think I may like Oppression better than either of the single tracks. This has also been officially reissued on CD, which is even cheaper than the vinyl.

Absolutely. I cannot recommend those 2 comps enough. You get so much more for your money than the Hollow Ground EP or the Satan single.

Here's a list I made of all the Guardian releases that I'm aware of:

GRM A16 Mythra - Death and Destiny
GRH C56 Hellanbach - Out to Get You
GR/HG C57 Hollow Ground - Don't Chase the Dragon
(GM-RA/B61 Red Alert - Third and Final)
GRC 80 V/A - Roksnax
(? V/A - Compilation on NEI)
GRC 120 Skitzofrenik - U.S.A
GRC 130 V/A - Roxcalibur
GRC 132 Battleaxe - Burn This Town
(GRC 136 No Cover - Two Hundred Voices)
GRC 144 Lone Wolf - Leave Me Behind
GRC 145 Satan - Kiss of Death
GRC 270 Tokyo Rose - Dry Your Eyes
GRC 2162 V/A - Pure Overkill
GRC 2164 Spartan Warrior - Steel n' Chains
GRC 2163 Millenium - Millenium
GRC 2165 Incubus - To the Devil a Daughter
GRC 2167 Splitcrow - Rockstorm

The ones in parentheses are, to the best of my knowledge, punk and the rest are NWOBHM.
