Great stuff by Saint Vitus and the track "Just Another Notch".

For lyrics to be really good and not just 'cool in the song' I expect them to be well written from whichever perspective you look at it, which is very rare in metal, childish rhymes and aggressive crap don't cut it. I love Saint Vitus, but they certainly won't be on my list. Of course I can't help but have a few favourites were the lyrics aren't that amazing but they just work so damn well within the song that they really get to me...

Tantrum – ‘Knights of Fire’
Liege Lord – ’Freedom’s Rise’ LP
Oblivion – ’Battle Warrior’
Longinds Past – ‘Meadows of Maseilya’ CD
Siren – ‘No Place Like Home’ LP
Emerald – ‘Armed For Battle’ EP
Snow White EP
Street Child EP
Agent Steel
Hammer – ‘Contract With Hell’
Arghoslent – ‘Galloping Through The Battle Ruins’
Heir Apparent-‘Hands of Destiny’
Miraj – ‘Trapped’
Malice-‘Stellar Masters’
Fates Warning – ‘Spectre Within’ & ‘Awaken the Guardian’
Judas Priest – ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’ & ‘Stained Class’
Hammer – ‘Across The Line’
Marquis de Sade – ‘Somewhere Up In The Mountains’
Maineeaxe – ‘Run To The Angels’
Saxon – ‘Denim & Leather’
Saracen – ‘Heroes, Saints, and Fools’
Manilla Road – ‘Crystal Logic’ LP
Metallica – ‘Ride the Lightning’ LP
Dead Brain Cells – ‘DBC’
Sacred Blad – ‘Of the Sun + Moon’ LP
Cathedral – ‘Forest of Equilibrium’
Warning

Perhaps the most overrated lyrics: Motörhead
Are you the tyrant, who cast them to the sea?
One day you'll be among the dead.

Probably because they were underrated (ignored) for a pretty long time.

Not being one to dig deep into the meaningfulness of Heavy Metal lyrics I still kind of like the sonar qualities of Maiden's To tame a land. To hear that album back when Piece of Mind was released, me being ten years old and figuring out a few words here and there, this song was a pure enigma...

It depends on what you wanna hear man. If you want "artistic" stuff like Guardian by Fate's Warning or stuff like Battle Hymns then "overrated" is the best case scenario for Motorhead lyrics as far as you're concerned. But if someone just looooooves that rock'n'roll/dirt metal thing then that kind o' lyrics are just poetry.

I like to write myself, so obviously I put more demand on the lyrics I read, I'm not snobbish about it, I don't analyse things and I sing along to the most banal lines, but if we're going to discuss this then I WILL look at things seriously and not just say yaah everythings cool with a beer bro.

These discussions will easily go down the road of 'it's about personal taste', which it IS, but there has to be some standard against which things are measured, or nothing at all would matter anymore, it's difficult, why should x or x mean more than so and so, but what should these standards be, everyone with a basic education and common sense can fathom the difference in quality of writing between the poetry of William Blake and say the script for a new detergent television advert yes? So basically no I don't respect everyone's opinion, because it leaves to circles of indifference, it gets us nowhere.

Why should there have to be a compromise because it is metal lyrics we're talking about? If we're to talk about what we think is GOOD, then I want it to be good regardless of context, and Leemy does NOT write good lyrics, they are sinply shit, sure they can be cool in the songs, but as stand-alone texts they are shit, just like Jim Morrison's poetry is shit, and yeah it's my opinion blah blah, but what I really think is that it's not just an opinion, I think it's a sensible way of looking at it, some lyrics are simply POOR. Love Motörhead lyrics all you want, but if you try to call them poetry then I'm not going to take you seriously.

As I said I do not care much for lyrics in music. I didn't realize this was supposed to be about "poetry". Anyway, to me Lemmy writes pretty good lyrics (often quite playful, good-natured and humourous - don't know about "dirt metal" though...).

As I said, to me I don't see why there should have to be a compromise in quality of writing just because we are dealing with lyrics to metal music, I'm making a difference between what I'd consider good lyrics and good writing, hardly any metal lyrics are truly well written.

I think that William Blake ,my friend, is an international poetry ,art standar and i think that his work is thaught throughout the world in schools ,universities etc etc.

BUT the lyrics of the bands mentioned here are a standard to whomever likes them and ,certainly not, a status quo ,not even in metal speaking generaly.

To me stuff like Orgasmatron ,Deaf Forever ,Just 'cause you got the power is totally great .And ,yeah ,i call it "poetry" ,with a beer in my hand or not, just 'cause i like lyrics more straight forward ,to you they are not just 'cause you want things "artistic" let's say ,your own way.

And yaeh ,it's JUST AN OPINION AND IT'S YOUR SENSIBLE way of lookin' at matters like that bro.

Oh and by the way ,don't take seriously all that you want ,you probably know that i couldn't give a damn bro. Not even a lil' one.

Matt Vinci apart from a great composer is also a great lyricist. My favourites are "Legend" from Burn to my touch and "Soldier's fortune" from Master Control which also happens to be my absolute favourite LL tune.

Indeed! Yeah I love all their LP:s, but the images the lyrics of the first album conjure up are the most spellbinding to me. God I love that band haha :D

Oh I don't know about that. Be fair, some are kinda childish but others are good and satirical, well written commentary! I don't think they are overrated at all.

one of my fave most insanely violent lyrics...

Incarcerated by my fear, paranoia
I'm condemned to live a wretched life
Confinement in a sterile world isolation
Disconjunction with society
Boiling my food to exhume the parasites
Diet infectious
Water flowing through, filters for distilling
Organisms infesting
Oxygen tanks, a breathing apparatus
Perpetuates vitality
Beleaguered by repulsion of defilement
Functional disorder of the mind
Obsessive aberration of absolute purity
Neurotic compulsion
Accursed affliction
Gnawing lamentation
Deteriorating intellect
Distortion of perception
Self proclaimed diagnosis
Drastic resolution
Self prescribe a red hot slug
White knuckle pistol grip
Load the chamber, hammer cocked
Jam the barrel in my mouth
Need a reprieve from my misery
Unrelenting anxiety
All ask is one final plea
.44 caliber brain surgery... surgery
[Leads Sykes, Reilly]
Purgatorial euphorium
Banish my affliction
Lead forged entry wound, exempting me from
Melancholic psychosis
Cybernetic annihilation
Finally set me free
Released from my coma, denied death's crushing jaws
Prolonged tortured existence
Informed by physicians, an amateur lobotomy
Deprived of an autopsy
Psychotic abortion
Grey matter negated
Premeditated remedy
Procedure of extremity
Thought I had a master plan
.44 in my hand
Assassination was my goal
Polluted filthy world a loathe
Suicide with no success
Abolished my obsessiveness
Propelled the cure emphatically
Change convictions radically
Practising without a degree
.44 caliber brain surgery
