Dutch Steel

Post by The Sentinel »

Holland delivered some great and furious heavy metal during the 80's. Some days I'm totally into 80's Dutch Steel and thinking about what a fucking great music this country had to offer. Good music is almost totally absent here and the best music from Holland was 80's heavy metal, period. Immortal records like Future Tense: Condemned to the Gallow, Martyr: For the Universe, Angus: Track of Doom, Proud Excistence: The Trial etc etc are timeless classics. Too bad people hail Holland for the cheese, mills, softdrugs, XTC, football (ahum!), woman and not for the excellent metal music from the golden era. What do you guys think of Dutch Steel and what are your favourites...

Holland undoubtedly offered great albums. And the death metal scene rules too! Here's some of faves:

MARTYR - For the universe MLP (incredible guitar work, the best ever!)
AVALON - The third move MLP (excellent melodic metal a la PRETTY MAIDS)
FUTURE TENSE - Condemned to the gallow EP (you already know about this monster...)
DEFENDER - City ad mortis (great speed metal with some RUNNING WILD touches)
VAULT - No more escape + 7'' (raw classic metal, they wrote some amazing songs!)
VALKIRIE - Deeds of prowess demo (Manowar worship TOP stuff!)
SAVAGE - Demo (another raw one!)

but let's not forget also PESTILENCE, ASPHYX, GOD DETHRONED etc.

Grrrreat MLP that never get mentioned enough! I need it! Gimmie-gimme-gimmie! You bastards missed my birthday by 2 weeks

Of course I second the opinions of FUTURE TENSE, ANGUS, VAULT (at least the godly 7"), SAD IRON, VALKYRIE (When the HELL is someone gonna make a vinyl reissue of this masterpiece!?) etc, but would also like give some credit to 2 personal Dutch faves: LADY - The Ladykiller EP and the Frankie Woodhouse - Something in the Air double-mini-lp-thingie. A simply perfect mix of early RAINBOW and nwobhm. Hammond organs aren't usually my cup of blood, but all songs on these releases are fucking brilliant! The cover art of FW might belong in this thread though..

I picked up both VORTEX albums at the last KIT and I must say I was slightly disappointed, at least w/ "Metal Bats" :( Need to give "Open The Gate" a few more spins before I decide what to do with these...

Hmm i understand why someone don't likes Vortex.Their music is catchy/German influenced metal.Maniac/Gravestone from Holland?
Personally Vortex is my absolute fave Dutch band!

The best Dutch Band to me besides of PICTURE (partially) and DEFENDER are HORIZON ! I have to admit, that they are very melodic, somewhere between Melodic Metal and Hard Rock, but "Master of the Game" is one of the best Albums in this genre ! The Singer Shmoulik Avigal sounds like the little brother of Ronnie James Dio ! He later joined PICTURE !

I don't think that that's the problem with Vortex. You could hardly call their stuff 'original'. Every riff they play is similar/quite similar/shamelessly similar to something else you've already heard. Add also some average vocals...there are tons of better bands than them, in and out of their country.
