Riff Fest !!!!!

Post by tomas »

very easy question...
which songs have the best riffs ever ?????
since this is a metal forum, everyone on it should be obsessed with riffs, lik i am ... 8)

my selection:
Sepultura - From The Past Comes The Storms: this one is a major riff fest. one superthrashing riff is followed by another superthrashing riff!!!!
Heavy Load - Full Speed At High Level: classic heavy metal riffing. easy but effective.
Kreator - Under The Guillotine- no explanation necessary :)

Everything JUDAS PRIEST did from '79-'84.
First 5 BLACK SABBATH albums.

A very metallic one that comes to my mind right now is the main riff on WHIPLASH's "Burning of Atlanta".

Yup, completely agree. The whole album is full of good riffing. "From the Past etc" is of course the best of the lot. ... and now I remember "Rest in Pain", the starting/chorus riff - THRAAAAAAAAAAASHHHHHH.

It's true that old SEPULTURA riffs are killers.Let's mentionned the "Innerself" riff (from " Beneath the Remains") which is also amazing.

Out of a quadrillion bands the one that popped up at the moment was nwobhm masters SPARTA. Their crunchy brand of generic riff-Metal is definition of the word "facepounding"

And what would be the ultimate riff-fest albumwise? Maybe PENTAGRAM - s/t LP.

One of my alltime favored metal guitar riffs comes from the 'Reign Of Terror' album by Wild Dogs!
Especially the riffs from "Metal Fuel" (*) and, to a lesser extend, "Spellshok"
and some other songs from this metal gem.
Jeff Mark is one of the most underated metal guitarists from the 80's
(give credits where credits are due!).

P.S.
(*)Being somewhat tone deaf (what's that?), I dare every guitar player on this forum to send me some tabs of both the beginning and the actual riff of this song!

Riffs is the cornerstone of all things metal so the real honesty is that there are far too many to mention.
But still, if one tries to be objective and place credits where credits are due, the best and most memorable riff ever is the one in "Children of the Grave". It's a riff whose legacy will live forever on - just think about that pretty much every doom or doom-ladden metal band with an ounce of self respect have made a song more or less based on variatons of this riff. And they pretty much all crush.
Here's just a tiny few:

Candlemass - Cry from the Crypt
Mercy - Judgement Day (and HM Warrios too)
Mercyful Fate - The Lady Who Cries
Trouble - Wickedness of Man
Chroming Rose “Pressure” LP found! :D
