Pure Fucking Metal Armageddon
Hello everybody,
I was checking some old magazines and I found something special.
It was August 2001 and the greek metal hammer did an 80+ page tribute to the the gold age of heavy metal, the 80's.
They dedicate 5-6 pages to each year focusing in new genres and their trademark album, important facts, underrated releases, overrated releases, newcomers, unknown artists, last releases of bands and some works that need to be mentioned.
At the end of each year's presentation they suggest 10 must have and 10 should have albums.
This issue had been my want list guide for years and I believe it is the greek metal hammer's best piece of work. Even though I do not always agree with the must/should have section of this tribute, they mention a great deal of the most important metal albums of the 80's in those pages (around 100 albums for each year).
I would like to share it with you, here is the trademark album in each years genre and the 20 (10 must have, 10 should have) suggested albums.
I will try to find some time and write down every release in these pages.
I am waiting to hear your own suggestions for each years best.
Manilla Road missing really hurts me, I don't think they like Mark Shelton's voice!
P.S.: There is an interview of David Fefolt's Valhalla in the same issue!!!
I hope you enjoy!

Re: Pure Fucking Metal Armageddon
Is the thread title the one Metal Hammer used or you chose it yourself? 'Coz albums like Slippery When Wet, Night Songs, Long Cold Winter etc are anything but pure fucking metal. Too much work for one thread anyway, there are already threads for the top albums for some years.

'Slippery When Wet ' was once the title for beginners here on this forum. I miss those titles today. This one would surely spur those with almost no posts to be more active. And those with zero posts should only see introduction thread.

It might have something to do with the fact that MR were still an obscure band in 2001. Or wasn't it? I knew next to nothing about old underground metal back then, but I feel they gained a cult status among younger fans only a bit later.
Needless to say, Metal Hammer has always been a mainstream oriented rag (at least the Polish edition thereof), so that's even less surprising.

I wasn't even born back then nor I like that Bon Jovi stuff, but I think slippery when wet along with motley crue and all those hair bands was considered metal back then.ION BRITTON wrote:'Coz albums like Slippery When Wet, Night Songs, Long Cold Winter etc are anything but pure fucking metal.
I consider Long Cold Winter to be some excellent piece of dirty hard rocking metal.

You may be right, but since you see bands like oliver magnum, fifth angel, acid, heavy load and since Manilla Road have 7 records in the 80's (I think all mentioned in the pages of this tribute), I think they deserve a place in one year's "should have" list.Herkus Monte wrote:vasilis2112 wrote: Manilla Road missing really hurts me, I don't think they like Mark Shelton's voice!

Either way, the list is pretty generic for the most part.

Re: Pure Fucking Metal Armageddon
A lot of stuff is of course a must-have, some for historical reasons, but I would be more interested, what they considered overrated and esp. underrated.
As for Manilla Road, they were certainly considered underrated all the way through the 80's, and as member Herkus said, they were too obscure (or obscured) for MH. If I remember correctly, Iron Pages and Hellion Records have started to resurrect them in the mid 90's, I guess with somewhat steady success. Well, it certainly helped. I still wonder, how Black Dragon releases were selling in their prime, and how MR were viewed at back then.
PS: what was the reason that old MR threads with polls were locked?

Re: Pure Fucking Metal Armageddon
Going a bit off topic now, but this is something I need to say. Back in the late 90s when I first discovered Manilla Road, people always talked about how underrated they are and how little exposure they had back in the 80's. They were supposed to be the hidden gem few underground fans knew about. That's the impression I had until old zines started coming in my hands. And Manilla Road seem to appear in one or another either through reviews or advertisement or interviews in many of those zines. In Kick Ass #26 they have for example a full-page ad of Roadster Records presenting Crystal Logic and Stygian Shore, I think late Bob used to press a round of 5000 for each issue, and that's quite a decent number as far as exposure is concerned. And they got quite positive reviews most of the time I must add. A band like Satan's Host for example, which the average underground metal fan is familiar with nowadays, seems to appear in the press far more sparsely in those times.
So, my point is that MR might not be as underrated as they are made out to be. Perhaps people forgot about them in the meantime either because it was hard to get hold of their material due to the rarity of their records or because epic metal simply wasn't the fad in the 90s or for some other reason I can't think of right now. Sure, they deserved a lot more even back then, but totally underrated or shamefully ignored by the fans I can't call them. Any opinions about this issue from the people who actually were consciously in the scene back in the 80s?

totaly agree!Noisenik wrote:A lot of stuff is of course a must-have, some for historical reasons
Let me give you an example.Noisenik wrote:I would be more interested, what they considered overrated and esp. underrated
1982
Underrated:
Magnum - Chase the Dragon
Mama's Boys - Plug it in
Shiva - Firedance
Manilla Road - Metal
Picture - Diamond Dreamer
Demon - The unexpected guest
August Redmoon - Fools are never alone !!!!
Overrated:
Nazareth - 2x5
Aerosmith - Rock in a hard place
Alice Cooper- Zipper catches the skin
Uriah Heep - Abominog
UFO - The Mechanix
Bad Company - Rough Diamonds
Re: Pure Fucking Metal Armageddon
still off-topic: IMHO, by the end of 80's MR were below horizon, at least as seen from my country, and when I saw an article about them in Iron Pages, I was certain it was an archaeological one.
