Help with Metal Monday Recommendations

Post by doomedplanet »

Thought I might make a topic to get a little help with song suggestions.

Starting in 2 weeks I'm going to be doing a couple hour, 'dj' gig at local taproom & bottleshop. I get paid in beer, what is not to like?

So I'm making some compilations in advance to play there and could use help. I'm limiting it at this point to 1979-1985. No non-English lyrics at this time. Any band singing in English from anywhere would work though. If this thing continues I might expand it beyond that but for now I have enough to choose form. I'm essentially looking for anthems or 'best' songs by classic metal bands. I guess you can see some of that by the list I typed up of my choices so far. I'm obviously mixing things up with the obvious and the obscure.

Set 1
Accept - Fast as a Shark
Black Water - Knock Down
Metal Church - Batallions
Lazarus Sin - Blood For Mercy

Thanks, keep 'em coming. Realized I need to include Thrust - Fist Held High
Good to get a Sabbath suggestion, since when I look at the albums I could never pick, I was more drawn to something oddball like 'Johnny Blade' instead of the obvious.

There is no 'wrong' suggestions of course, Birth Control though I've never seen that album before so I'll check it out but I have no easy way to include it as I won't use any mp3 downloads for what I'm doing.

But on that same note, does anyone have the flac or wav rip of the McGovney "No life 'til Leather'? I was going to use a demo version but realized I just have a 192K rip.

I see Queen of the Reich is a popular choice, I picked that one too. i'm listening to Heavy Load 'Metal Conquest' and I'm reminded that just about any song of this EP could be used, such a classic record. An unintended side effect of this is listening to some of these old favorites for the first time in years.

When listening to Black Water - Knock Down can anyone tell me of other songs that have such a 'chainsaw' guitar sound? I was listening to this song awhile back with a friend and he made the comment that he had never heard s song that had such a sound.

Thunderfire suggestion reminds me I don't have that record(damn), just the single, which my copy is kind of rough and too much surface noise to use.

NWOBHM : '79 Revisited" I noticed some excellent choices but I wouldn't use all of them, haha. I would be more inclined to use all of 'Lead Weight' first, If I were to go that route.

There are several reissues on CD for this one if you are in a pickle, one cheap edition is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Bang-Birth-Control/dp/B00000I27I
Or can you only play vinyl? Because I've never seen that for sale.. :(
The band is technically Prog Rock / Kraut, so I'd understand if they aren't heavy enough for this version of the show.
