90s metal discussion & recommendations?

Post by Outcast »

Of course, I mean real metal stuff... HM, epic, power, doom, speed and thrash. Good bands and releases from the worst decade.

However, I'm not looking for too many doom recommendations, as basically, whole that scene peaked in early and mid-90s. But some obscure doom is of course welcome (bands in the range of SCALD and CALVARIO, not obvious stuff as SOLITUDE AETURNUS or COUNT RAVEN which everyone knows)

No obvious 90s stuff as ICED EARTH, STEEL PROPHET or HAMMERFALL.

But in the past decade there at least appeared/peaked some interesting bands which I really like as REVEREND BIZARRE, WARNING, MORNINGSTAR, HEATHEN HOOF, THE GATES OF SLUMBER, PORTRAIT, RAM, ORODRUIN, ATLANTEAN KODEX, TWISTED TOWER DIRE etc... I remember 90s as really, really desperate.

Real and traditional metal, not stuff like that, please.

I know SKULLVIEW and ROTOR from the list, good but nothing spectacular.

I take 90s any time over '00 ...

Sure there was a lot of crap (from Sepultura idiocy to Korn etc.) but also things that weren't "available" before :P ("technic" death metal, gothic metal, prog metal etc.)

None of them is interesting to me. Well, maybe Atlantean Kodex have made a few fairly good songs, but not good enough to buy their stuff to me.

As for the 90s: it sucked as well, although there was a few bands that soldiered on from the 80s, not caring much about the past decade being already over(Running Wild or Virgin Steele). Plus some suprisingly good albums by X-Wild or Domine and bands from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania or Bulgaria, where good heavy metal was played even about 1994 (Kreyson, Sifon, Ossian, Celelalte Cuvinte, Er Malak). But that`s it, unless we diregard the fact that the metal from the very beginning of that period belonged actually to the 80s.

I`m certain there is a few other LPs from the 90s I would like but I really can`t be arsed to explore those years further on.
