CULT OF THE UNDERDOG Podcast : Summer Special Now Available!
CULT OF THE UNDERDOG
Episode 5½ : Summer Special - Target Of Interest (Jul 2022)
As promised/threatened here's a themed Summer Special mini-episode to tide you over until the next full 'proper' episode in August. Best enjoyed in the sunshine with your tipple of choice.
Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville made the first known recording of a human voice, on April 9, in the year 1860.
It was a 20-second recording of a person singing 'Au Clair de la Lune', a classic French folk tune. The French song was recorded on a phonautograph machine that could only record and not play back.
For the next 141 years, despite many advances in the techniques of audio recording, playback & broadcasting, no-one ever really found a compelling reason for any of these related technologies to exist.
Cult Of The Underdog was launched in 2021.

Re: CULT OF THE UNDERDOG Podcast : Summer Special Now Available!
A lot of great stuff this time.
First song is of course a cover of RIot's Warrior. If heard it lately somewhere but i don't remember. Honjoh Misako played that song but it was different.
Second one is Trust of course. B-side from their first single.
The song that starts at about 11th minute could be from Bloodgood. But sadly i do not know that one because it's a great song!
The first of the Yougoslavian tracks could be from Bjelo Dugme but i am not shure at all and i don't know wich one. They made a lot of really good songs.

You're welcome Nenad, that was exactly the vibe i was after so i'm glad to hear that it was conveyed accurately. No Yugo clues just yet, though i should acknowledge that the rip of that song came from DaN whilst the rip of the Riot cover was courtesy of Tadakatsu H0nda. Thanks to both of you.
Don't know if this will help, but you're almost half right.

I had guessed that was who you had meant so i hoped my prompt might get you there. The song is 'Breach Of Lease' & if you liked this cover version (which i think is really good in it's own right), you should check out the Bloodrock original (or even better, the live version).

Ah it's from the third album! I don't have it and i do not own the live album.
I was dissapointed by Bloodrock 2 comparing to the first and i gave up then.
Seems that i should give them a chance now!

I agree with you that '2' is no match for their debut, though there are some good individual songs on it too. They never scaled the heights of their debut again unfortunately, but '3', & 'U.S.A.' both have some great tracks on them. The 'Live' album was recorded while they were touring '3' so all the material is from their strongest era and it's a really good listen, at least to my old ears.
After 'U.S.A.' the personnel began changing & the quality trails off dramatically as they moved (unconvincingly) in a more Prog-Jazz-Rock direction on their last few albums. The music's played well enough but they'd completely lost their identity after the singer & lead guitarist both left.

Does the entire episode consist of covers sung in different languages than the original?

It's not quite that complicated, though i do wish i'd thought of that.
The theme is just covers that were reasonably contemporary with/to the original. I self-imposed a five year max limit between the original & the cover, but still managed to break my own rule twice in the episode.

The song that starts at 22:41 is from THE BIRDHOUSE.
All the Lessons from Rose Tattoo.
That was relatively easy because they are singing in english!
I even had this record once 20 years ago but gave it to a friend quickly. I did not like it at all!
I still don't like the singer but the solos are cool.

The next song (after the Birdhouse) could be "Into the void" from Black Sabbath.
No idea from who. I even don't know the language! Is this portuguese?
The next one is probably "We are the Road Crew" from Motörhead performed by an unknown Punk Band.
Then "Tales of Mystery" from Michael Schenker. I believe i know that voice but nothing comes to mind at the moment.

OK, "Tales of Mystery" from Michael Schenker sounds like RAVENS'HEAD, but i don't find that song on their CD! Only similar ones.
So it's not them i think!?

Well recognised! I like the rockabilly-esque swagger The Birdhouse brought to their version whilst still retaining the drive of the original. The Sabbath cover is sung in Czech if that helps, and no, that MSG cover isn't by Ravens'head, but i do hear the similarity in the vocal in their quieter moments.tbieri wrote: ↑Sun Jul 03, 2022 8:53 am The song that starts at 22:41 is from THE BIRDHOUSE.
