Best of 2013

Post by Marken »

Ok, here we go again....Your favourite-albums this year, please?

What a year for metal-releases. In my opinion it has been one of the best years ever, along with the 1989-1991 period.
I have bought 115 cd's with a releasedate in 2013, and this is my top 15:

1. Asgard - "Outworld"
2. Stratovarius - "Nemesis"
3. Attacker - "Giants Of Canaan"
4. Black Trip - "Goin' Under"
5. Hell - "Curse & Chapter"
6. Voltax - "Hiding Into Flames"
7. Death Angel - "The Dream Calls For Blood"
8. Havok - "Unnatural Selection"
9. In Solitude - "Sister"
10. Nomad Son - "The Darkening"
11. Onslaught - "VI"
12. Tribulation - "The Formulas Of Death"
13. Devil - "Gather the Sinners"
14. Borrowed Time - "s/t"
15. Artillery - "Legions"

Been a great year this year. Lots of records I enjoyed. Here's what stood out and has taken over my listening time:

Borrowed Time
Solstice
Atlantean Kodex
Eternal Champion demo
Satan
Stone Dagger
Procession
Zemial

Here's what I liked but not quite to the same level:

Darkthrone
Attacker
Darkthrone
Enforcer
Voltax
Cromlech
Carcass
BAT
Funeral Circle
Magic Circle
Magister Templi
Naer Mataron
Ravensire
Terminus
Inquisition

Didn't like:

Warlord
Manilla Road
Moss
Ruins of Beverast
Witches Mark
Thou Art Lord
Age of Taurus

still need to hear Satan's Host, Argus, Battle Ram, Hell plus a few others

It's been a good year for sure. Better than 2012 or 2011. I've acquired just under 50 studio albums of 2013 and probably listened to 20 or so more.

Here's an attempt at a top 20:

1. Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart
2. Hell - Curse & Chapter
3. Atlantean Kodex - The White Goddess
4. Attacker - Giants of Canaan
5. Enforcer - Death by Fire
6. Coven 13 - Destiny of the Gods
7. Mael Mórdha - Damned When Dead
8. Nomad Son - The Darkening
9. Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche
10. Helloween - Straight Out of Hell

11. Warlord - The Holy Empire
12. Borrowed Time - Borrowed Time
13. Asgard - Outworld
14. Rocka Rollas - Metal Strikes Back
15. Oliva - Raise the Curtain
16. Sinister Realm - World of Evil
17. Manilla Road - Mysterium
18. Satan - Life Sentence
19. Circle II Circle - Seasons Will Fall
20. Argus - Beyond the Martyrs

Also enjoyed: Avatarium, Saxon, Ritual Steel, Sodom, Metal Grave etc.

Disappointments: No major ones. Well, the album from Algy Ward's version of Tank wasn't what I had hoped.

Foot note: Still don't have that Ravensire album which I expect to make it into the top 20 easily. My cd was sent to the wrong address first and no sight of the second copy yet. Hopefully I will have it shortly after the holidays.
Chroming Rose “Pressure” LP found! :D

I have not listened to much albums from this year, but the highlights for me would be the new Satan and Enforcer albums.
Also the split 7" of Doomed Beast and Johnny Touch is for me on the same level as those two releases. DB continue with their magnificent Heavy metal, known from the demo, while JT`s track is not as excellent as the one from their split with Stryker, but still very good imo.
I still need to hear Borrowed Time´s album. I have to say that I did not like any of their previous releases (actually I liked one track), but the new song I heard really surprised me, and it sounds VERY promising. Waiting for the LP to arrive!
As for the disappointments of the year for me, I would say definitely In Solitude´s new album. I really liked the titletrack, so I ordered it, but it turned out to be the only song that I liked....
Maybe the biggest disappointment for me would be the album of Sign Of The Jackal. It was the most anticipated album of the year for me, as the previous releases belong to my favorite ones of the last 20 years. And in the end the album consisted of just 4 new tracks + every song, they have previously released, making even their previous releases quite senseless as well...Surely, new fans will discover a great release, but for me as an older fan, it feels like listening to a compilation, that has already collected dust and will get nowhere near as much spins, as I expected....

For me Avatarium was the best release in 2013. Some others, Havok, DGM, Avantasia, Queensrÿche.

Looking forward to new Darkology 2014.

I don't keep up with current Metal as much as I should, so these are like the only albums I've heard this year and I haven't even listened that much to them:

Procession - to Reap the Heavens Apart. Candlemass meets Primordial
Voivod- Target Earth, Don't call it a comback, but a great return to form
Cultes de Ghoules - Henbane. something akin' to a Mysteriis dom Sathanas in 2013.
I've listened a bit to Atlantean Kodex and In Solitude too but not enough, what I've heard from both bands sounds like definite improvements tho.
I really failed to actually check out both Satan and Warlord.
Some other songs I digged even if I never really got down and dirty with the actual releases: Alpha Tiger - Crescen Moon, Deceptor- To know infinity

Biggest dissapointment was clearly Ghost. The success went to their heads, too washed out. perhaps 2-3 great tracks and a lot of blandness

Satan
Atlantean Kodex
Tribulation
Enforcer
Witchgrave
In Solitude
Blood Ceremony
Watain
Attacker
Dead Lord
Black Trip
Ghost
Ranger

Probably another 10-15 I've forgotten at the minute- much, much better year than 2012, bought loads of lps, got sent some good stuff (which working for a mag nowadays is pretty rare in itself!)

01. Black Sabbath – 13
02. Saxon – Sacrifice
03. Warlord – The Holy Empire
04. Hell – Curse & Chapter
05. Electro_Nomicon – Unleashing the Shadows
06. Black Soul Horde – Tales of the Ancient Ones
07. Solstice – Death’s Crown Is Victory
08. Satan – Life Sentence
09. Atlantean Kodex – The White Goddess
10. Avatarium - Avatarium

I also liked a lot albums like: Age of Taurus – "Desperate Souls of Tortured Times", Blazon Stone – "Return to Port Royal", Dread Sovereign – "Pray to the Devil in Man", Masters of Metal – "Masters of Metal", Zemial - Nykta

And there were some more cool stuff from bands like Attacker, Blitzkrieg, Chastain, Black Oath, Metal Church, Noctum, Procession, Ravensire, Sacral Rage, Satan’s Host, Stallion, Wizar’d.

Worst 2013:
1. Queensryche – Frequency Unknown

From re-releases & other old material the best were: Virtue - "We Stand To Fight", Elixir - "The Son of Odin", Bastille - "Electric Animation", Lordian Guard - "Anthology", Dizziness - "On The Rocks" and Jack Starr - "Out of the Darkness"
