Another one I can't figure out is Rust In Peace by Megadeth. A quite common record, but original US pressings go for around 300€ nowadays. Insane.
It’s just not nearly as common as you think. Around 1100 owners of the US pressing on Discogs, versus some 8000 owners of the various European pressings. Peace Sells, a record four years older, has owners many times those numbers (6000 own a US pressing). By 1990, vinyl sales were dwindling, and in the US it was in its death throes.
The next Megadeth record, Countdown… from 1992, has about 4000 registered owners in various European pressings. There wasn’t even a US edition on vinyl.
You hear about a very cool record, what do you do? You go on discogs to check the price, eventually you jump on ebay without much hope to find it cheaper there. You call that a hunt?
Discogs pretty much has something very close to a monopoly on second hand records sale, lack of diversity on places where you can buy stuff also has a lot to do with how lame record collecting have become. So discogs can manipulate and dictate the market pretty much in the direction they want, sadly the few surviving record stores have aligned as well. Amazon, ebay, discogs, and social media, there's no more diversity or choices on internet. One exclusive platform for one kind of interaction, that's how poor the internet is right now, not to mention how much of a garbage bin it has generally become. I'll be finishing my label and zine this year and then I'll try to get out of it completely...

Over 1000 owners = quite common in my book.
Then you must consider Iron Maiden's "X Factor" and "Virtual XI" original pressings really common records too? So why have they cost in the three figures nearly since the turn of the millennium? There's just not nearly enough supply to satisfy demand. Case is really not that much different from a Medieval Steel EP or a Salem's Wych LP, except for scale.
From US pressed Megadeth studio albums, Rust in Peace is by far the rarest, and it's no less in demand than the earlier ones. If anything, more so. US pressing is also way rarer than EU or UK pressings, and they still fetch around 100 euros due to high demand in combination with relative rarity compared to earlier Megadeth albums on vinyl.
Also, a European "Persecution Mania" has three times as many owners compared to a US "Rust in Peace", so the math seems to be working rather soundly.
Mordred is totally right. Although in a way it sounds completely absurd, that there's more European pressings available, than US pressings for certain records. Got a few more, all released at the same time and one might think that the better market was in the US. But nö, mainly or only European pressings available for 2 Glam acts from the US of A. And there's more, but these 2 are good examples, that have quite "neat prices":
Vinyl only released in Europe: https://www.discogs.com/de/master/34162 ... lentine
@Khnud:
Don't have a link for that Sodom auction, I just saw it while am I was searching other stuff. Can't even say what's been the final price it was sold for...
There was a nice copy on Vinted last weekend for €100. Was sold quite fast, too.
And turns out I do own Persecution mania...it's Agent orange that I'm missing on vinyl.
So yeah...maybe one aspect of record collecting which I miss is when I used to know everything I owned. Now I have a discogs list for vinyls and CD. And an Excel list for tapes. And even with that, I manage to unknowingly buy doubles for my collection, simply because I'm so sure I don't own them yet that I don't even bother to check the lists.

Out of...the active part of the scene (publishing)? Or collecting?
By the way, Namur on Friday? Gig went completely under my radar but Jasper pointed it out to me. Didn't know Mordor was still playing live.
But Namur + weekday evening = horrible logistics due to the traffic. So not sure yet if I'll go.

The ambition would be : out of the internet altogether
I finish late this friday, not sure I can handle the logistics as well! Yes Mordor the Swiss band! Legendary funeral doom band!

I was a big fan of theirs back then & still have all their releases. I even bought the T-shirt thanks for the heads-up.

"Proud to commit commercial suicide" is basically the motto of the guy(s?) organising those shows in Namur area. I reckon the shows they organise that end up costing them money outweigh by far the shows that generate a profit. And then they program something like Mordor/Naked whipper, which is a show you just know can never even come close to breaking even.
But yeah, if they can come up with the cash, good for people that want to see some shows that otherwise would never get booked. Unfortunately it seems that for me, logistically, I just won't be able to attend.
Collecting still fun. Of course Discogs changed the game a bit, but on the other hand theres plenty possibilities, because not every record have sales history and if you're more openminded you always look for these rarities in other genres like punk, soul , prog , psych , garage and can find these cheap and then trade these for whatever you want or even sell for big €$£ and in return invest these money for items from your "want list".
