WOW. Thank you very much humus. This is really the right book for Belgian hard rock and heavy metal. I am speechless.
Contact Eddy Vermeiren and tell him to reissue this gem immediately (I'm kidding of course).
Every country should have a book like this.
My "list" looks amateurish compared to this.

Re: Belgian GOOD Metal :)

Post by emosteel »

I'm afraid I'll bore you with a very long post again. Over the past few days I've managed to review the contents of the book HEAVY SOUNDS DISCOGRAPHY 1968-1990 provided by Humus. This content has offered me a lot of material for research on the web.
The book covers a much broader time period, as well as many groups that are stylistically not the subject of my research.

Below is the list of bands from Eddy and Pascal's book. For the bands not on my lists (MAIN and "MISSING INFORMATION"), I have provided additional information from Discogs, as well as whether I have added the band to my list. For the bands from the book that are on my main list and the "MISSING INFORMATION" section, there is no additional information. Of course, this is strictly subjective and subject to future discussion with the The Corroseum community.

I have three questions for Humus. (I hope I'm not being cheeky.)

The only band I couldn't find any information about is SPOOKY. This is the nickname of the bass guitarist of KILLER (Ivo van Dooren), but nothing more. I would be infinitely grateful to Humus if he could clarify who the mysterious band is and what they have released.

The second difficult task. The book mentions only one band STRESS. I found three (you will see them in the list below). Two of them have one song each in two different compilations, and the third has only one single. Is this not one band and Discogs is wrong? Or maybe there are two STRESS bands? The only information we have is from DaN and it is related to a band STRESS from the Melange Genk compilation. As you can guess, this task can only be solved by Humus - the guy with the BOOK.

The third question is related to the band POWER. This is the band with the track "Good Time Tonight" released on Metalmania compilation (LP, K.P. Records – KP 500) 1983. According to Discogs, the same band is included on the compilation "Full Force - Volume One" (LP, Reaction Records – UNREST 10) 1988 with the track "Sex, Whiskey And Rock'n'Roll". Is this information on Discogs wrong or is POWER really included on both compilations?

Of course, if I owned the book, it would be much easier for me to judge whether the bands whose style I doubt, such as ALFREDO BOOM BAND, BATTLE SNAKE, BLACKSTEEL, BOOGIE CLOWNS, BRAINTRUST, CITY TALES, EQUINOX, LAZY, LEO STICK, LOCO MOSQUITO, NO TIME, ORPHEUS, PHASE, ROCK DRAGON, SKYSCRAPER, SOURCE, THE RAG, TIGER are bands from my style framework or not, because there the style of each band is labeled:

PP - pop
RK - rock
MR - melodic rock
HR - hard rock
TR - thrashrock
ME - metal
CR - crossover
SR - symphonic rock / prog
BR - bluesrock

The same applies to the exact year of publication, because for many of them it is unknown.
As Eddy writes, this stylistic division is quite subjective, but it will still help me narrow down the circle of "MISSING INFORMATION" bands. Of course, the best way is to be able to hear a record and judge for myself, but unfortunately, these are very rare singles and mixed compilations that are very expensive or difficult to find.

Finally, there are a few bands that are on my list but missing from the book - ARGUS, BUSTED, DOPPLER, JA DAN STIK, JUSTIN CAYSE, LIFTER, LYNX, RICOCHET, STEEL, THOR, ZWARE MANU . I'm sure some of them have a place on my list, but I haven't listened to any of the others like JA DAN STIK, JUSTIN CAYSE, LIFTER, RICOCHET, ZWARE MANU and further research would be needed.

Bands that go directly to the MAIN LIST:

1. ANCIENT RITES – Dark Ritual - The band's first demo from 1990, which was reissued on vinyl, is thrash metal with black metal lyrics.

2. LAZARE - combination of epic AOR and melodic metal with great vocal

[

3. ODYSSEE - From the 30 second sample here [http://pochette2.free.fr/rockfrancais/odyssee45t.html], I understand that the style is close to that of LAZARE - melodic hard rock, AOR. There is little doubt whether this is a French or French-Belgian band like MARBLE ARCH.

4. VAIS - I listened to the band's two demos - Silent Torture (1991) and Roaming Forever (1992). For me the style is thrash metal and the track from the 1993 compilation goes to the main list.

Blimey, that's a lot of info to absorb.
Hats off to you emosteel for taking the time to enlighten us with your work & to hummus also for providing you with 'the sacred texts'. :D
I may be able to add a few more lesser known names, though they'll likely all be from the 70's era which has been a bigger focus for me in recent years. It's on my to-do list.

Okay, i bit the bullet & did a deep dive in my 60's/70's singles folder & turned up a few names that might merit inclusion.
Sometimes only one side of these records is of interest with the age old commercial side/heavy side problem in full effect. Also, one man's Heavy Psych is another man's Hard Prog, but rest assured the presence of a mere fuzz guitar will lead someone to hype it as killer Proto-Metal.
The 60's stuff is likely to be of lesser interest here, but i'll include them anyway.

ADAM'S RECITAL - There’s No Place For Lonely People 7'' (Bel-1967)
BRAINCANCER - Ain’t Got Time 7'' (Bel-1971)
FRISWA - (I Still Remember) Eddie 7'' (Bel-1974)
GRANT - Time Is Money 7'' (Bel-1976)
KLEPTO - Rock And Roll 7'' (Bel-1976) (Post-Kleptomania i think)
MELROSE ABBEY - Little Fat Jim 7'' (Bel-1975)
MORVAN & CLIMAX - Ev’ry Day And Night 7'' (Bel-197x)
NEW INSPIRATION - Come Let’s Sing Us Hallelujah 7'' (Bel-1972)
THE INTONATION SINGERS - Do It 7'' (Bel-197x)
THE SNAP SHOTS - Hip-Hip Hurray 7'' (Bel-1968)
I cannot, I shall not, I will not obey.

The credit for the above goes entirely to Humus. I only collected the information from Discogs and systematized it. I suppose I made some mistakes, but they are due to insufficient information and inaccuracies in the Discogs database. As for the bands from the 70s, they may be the subject of another study, which I leave to someone else.
I myself have no stylistic restrictions when listening to rock music.
I am currently enjoying KING OF SPADES - The Third Mountebank (1990), and before that Excess Of Cruelty – Under The Ivy Of Ithamar (1997).

That's modest of you, but the fact remains that i only read this information due to your actions, so thank you.
Accept my gratitude, damn it!

Ah, credit to Eddy actually. My humble contribution is buying his book.
Regarding the questions, I'll check the book and report back here.

I had an idea about the band SPOOKY, about which I couldn't find any information. Maybe Eddy Vermeiren was referring to the track Big Steel from the compilation Heavy, Hell & Metal (1988). Here the artist is listed as Ivo van Dooren (SPOOKY), not KILLER. Then it would look like this:

SPOOKY - Big Steel released Heavy, Hell & Metal compilation (CD, Imtrat – 100.087) 1988
[https://www.discogs.com/release/3639622 ... Hell-Metal]

Track Big Steel is re-recorded and re-released with the title "Steel Meets Steel" on the album Fatal Attraction in 1990.

Haven't forgotten about the book yet, just a bit short on time.

In other news Marc, the Crossfire guitarist, died. Often called the Belgian Mantas.
Quite a tragic figure, living on the outskirt of society for a long time now. Alcohol abuse etc. We live in the same city and he used to frequent the same bar as I, he always carried a totally worn down picture of him on stage in the early 80's in his pocket.

He looked like Mantas did, before Mantas did ! Even on the Onion Dolls 7" from 1979, he had "that" look. RIP indeed :(
