Female-fronted NWOBHM

Despite the well-known video of that guy who said women have no place in metal, there were quite a few bands:

Girlschool: no comment necessary

War Machine: really good, may not be considered NWOBHM by some because of the dates

Siege: really horrible

She: really poppy

Thunderstick: not too great, not horrible either

Satanic Rites: just started listening to them, not bad so far

I've probably missed one or two I can't recall, and some I don't know about.

Oral - sexploitation band. One decent song, the rest are meh.
Rock Goddess - run-of-the-mill nwobhm.

i love the oral 12"! the barely competant yet catchy ac/dc riffs complete with thick accent and retarded lyrics... great take on the pistols/professionals cover too

agreed that siege kinda sucked - the american one was obviously way better

canis major were mostly pretty bad but i really like that track "fire"

ground zero demo is really solid. runestaff had some good tracks too

"i'm not dead yet" on the thin end of the wedge 7" is really awesome too... quite theatrical. the other side is just ok

y diawled - "noson y blaidd" is the best one for me

Don't forget Diamond Lil, i really enjoyed their posthumous "Patron Of Hell" 7", but they may be just a little too early to qualify as a pure NWoBHM band.
I believe they existed from '75 to '78 if memory serves.

diamond lil were cool, they certainly have an older style hendrix/sir lord baltimore sound going on. i think that 7" is recordings from 76

Me too. Also, some of Rhiannon Tomos' solo work could be classified as NWOBHM (especially if we are considering bands like She and Thunderstick).

After Hours - haven't heard them but they are supposed to be in the vein of Girlschool/Rock Goddess

Amazon - another borderline act

Avenue, Lost Property, Rough Justice, Sian - seen these bands in Malc's encyclopedia but they all appear to be more rock than NWOBHM

Vermilion - quite punky but I rather like it

MASQUE is by far the best female fronted metal group from the UK,
but chronologically they are post-NWOBHM

There's also 3 songs on the Tredegar Remix+Rebirth CD, but I didn't know it was a female until I read the liner notes.

Martin Popoff describes them as "a female-fronted band comparable but scrappier than Girlschool or Rock Goddess. B-side: Suspicious is less the rocker than the combative All Over Town." Malc's book offers a similar description (he also compares them to Avenue on the A-side and Amazon on the B-side) but not really any more info.
