Best THRASH METAL album of the year 1986

Post by The Erlking »

This year seems to be the magical year (or turning point) for Thrash Metal to many. Slayer and Metallica released their most popular albums the same year for example. I'm not much of a RiB or MoP fan myself (I prefer Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits from Slayer, Kill 'Em All and AJFA from Metallica) but surely there's bunch of great records from this year. I'll have to go with Kreator's Pleasure To Kill. It's crushing, influencal (I think it's much closer to Death Metal than RiB that usually gets nods for this) and generally all that I love in the more harsh Thrash Metal.

AJFA? :? Don't you mean RTL?

Hallows Eve - Death & Insanity
Hirax - Hate, Fear and Power :P

I do like PtK a lot better than Rib & MoP, but I never made a real connection with it.

Not really. I don't like much Metallica's basic Thrash stuff like RTL and MoP although both have some good moments sure. The reason I like Kill 'Em All is because it's nwobhm-fueled half speed, half thrash metal album and in AJFA I like the technothrashtic tendencies. Sure the songs are longer they should be because they play the same riffs 16 times more than necessary but I find similar flaws in MoP as well.

Classics for me. I tend to like the late 80s speed/thrash more, when the scene really evolved.

Master of Puppets - light years ahead of everyone else.

Reign in Blood - a timeless classic - some of the most memorable speed/thrash riffs ever written! But Slayer were still peaking at the time ...

Darkness Descends - trying to be more brutal than Slayer, eh? Great stuff, but what really stands out here are Gene Hoglan's lyrics - did he really came up with all that back in 1986?

My three favorite thrash metal records of all time were released this year. Namely METALLICA "Master of Puppets", EXUMER "Possessed by Fire" and KREATOR "Pleasure to Kill".

Lots of other great ones as well of course, like "Eternal Devastation", "Reign in Blood" and whatnot. Definitely the year of thrash metal for me.

Pleasure To Kill slaughters the competition. Nothing else from '86 even comes close.
