SUPERNAUT - s/t 1974

Post by tomas »

I put this in the 'Into Battle' section because it's about a proto-metal band. Or at least I think it is.

I first heard those recordings today and I have a hard time believing they were made in 1974. They just don't sound 70s to me, especially the drums. Maybe this is a new band and therefore a hoax? Any thoughts?
But does it slay witches?

You just don't know with these one vague recording bands. Without any evidence of liveshows or any release back in the day it's hard to tell.

If it would be from the '70s it's one of the heaviest/most Sabbathish bands out there. And that makes it hard to believe. Just like the first Jacula.

Oh no this band was definitely no hoax & Supernaut is a great album! I'd say the general opinion is that S/T album leaned more toward glam rock than anything else, definitely one of the forgotten relics of the 1970ies Aus. rock scene.

Their later new wave/punk (loosest use of that term punk) stuff was ok too but for me the s/t album is the only one I spin 'I Like it Both Ways' is catchy as hell, one of those songs that when it gets in my head it stays there for days!

...1976, not 1974.

I thought we were talking about the Aussie band too, wasn't the UK band another one of those old terrible sounding/looking Kissing Spell releases? If it was, i'd double check the facts surrounding its provenance. Many of their releases were bootlegs with the acts being renamed to prevent detection, Antrobus being a prime example, this was actually the Scottish band Iron Claw. There's also an album (sorry the band name escapes me), by "a band" featuring John Du Cann (Atomic Rooster) and Pete French (Atomic Rooster/Leaf Hound), which French later took exception to, saying they were bedroom demos that the 2 recorded together (during their Rooster days), in one afternoon. The label had given the record a fictitious band name and a false back story about the "short lived band", making out that this was a separate entity altogether. I believe Du Cann had sanctioned this release however.
The Aussie band played some good Glammy Hard Rock stuff though, check the crazy performance clip of "I Like It Both Ways", from '70's Aussie tv on youtube.

I bought a few Kissing Spell releases back in the day (mid-nineties). And until now I had never heard of this renaming scam. A few names in my collection: Charge, Irmin's Way, Daemon (supposedly pre-Bullet, pre-Hard Stuff) and maybe one or two more. Do you know if there are any good sources on the net for finding out the true origins of their releases? Have an urge for clarifying of stuff like time of recording, musicians featured - and the name of the band. :? Did they get (any of) the song titles right?

There's loads of very suspicious stuff that was out on Kissing Spell in the 90s. Daemon is certainly one. The British Supernaut is another one. The CD contains a supposed authentic newspaper clipping from the Chesterfield Chronicle (May 15th 1974) on the band, but I can't even find said paper on the Internet. I must say I find the material on it pretty boring, though definitely heavy.
I know I ain't doing much,
doing nothing means a lot to me.

The Daemon album is the one i was specifically talking about earlier, i couldn't remember the "band's" name. I read that this was a bedroom jam between Du Cann & French during their time in Atomic Rooster, but was later punted by Kissing Spell as a rare lost album by a short-lived band. Which was patently false as French has stated in a few interviews since. I believe the Charge album is genuine and saw a limited release back in the '70's, but can't say as i know anything about Irmin's Way.
Most of the scarce info i've found on the label and it's releases has been from specialist blogs and forums around the net. You could maybe ask over at http://www.hellridemusic.com/forum/foru ... y.php?f=49
See this thread for more info on the Antrobus/Iron Claw "confusion".
http://www.hellridemusic.com/forum/show ... php?t=5037
Audio Archives was another reissue label which issued a lot of material of dubious provenance, but some of it was worth hearing for historic reasons.
Hope this info is useful.

I think there was a lengthy thread about Kissing spell on the Psychedelica yahoogroup, I think you can search their archives even if you're not a group member. I have the "Hellhound" lp on Kissing spell, sloppy proto-"doom" w/crappy sound...yet still strangely enjoyable. Kissing spell also released that "Axe" live album that is rumoured to have a few songs by a completely different band...haven't heard that one so can't confirm either way.

That can't be right can it? :?
They're both on the "In Hearing Of..." album.
