Yeah, many good bands released a mediocre/bad debut, and then they got good/awsome in their next releases...which are your examples guys ...(im not talking about how they progressed technically over the years)
Anathema's 'Serenades' is their best along with Pentecost III. My Dying Bride's 'Symphonare Infernus' EP along with 'As the Flower Withers' remains their most potent work. Paradise Lost's 'Lost Paradise' is perhaps the only one of those you mentioned I agree did better later on.

I like Cirith Ungol's debut, but their later stuff is better
All three of the big UK doom bands (Anathema, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride) did much better on later albums than on their debuts
although i dont like these bands, they released albums that marked and era in metal later on, specially in Paradise Lost case, the Draconian Times of P.Lost is a totally different band from the one in the first album
