Spectral Incursion doesn't sound like any single sub-genre to me. They're definitely progressive, but they're also thrashy in tempo yet without too many thrash riffs, and bouncy/gallop-y in a traditional metal way but dark and quirky which brings to mind early alternative-ish metal bands like Mind O...

The intro to Totentanz on Coroner's RIP is apparently a cover, although I haven't heard the original version.

This actually probably my favorite Jag Panzer release. I like the more melodic direction they took away from Ample Destruction, but at the same time it's still a very "tough" headbanging album. With Chain of Command they cut away all the edge and turned the old songs into what could have b...

I've always wondered about what that live 1983 Coroner demo sounds like. Supposedly it's closer to hard rock, but I'd still love to know more about it.

Adramelch's Zephirus. Every time it gets to the chorus and the singer is just crying "ZEEEEEEEPHIRUUUUUUUUUS", with that dark Call of Ktulu-esque guitar harmony playing, I shudder. Never heard power metal so gloomy before.

Thank you! The guitar tone on this demo shows how thrashy/aggressive some of their riffs are, but still does not hide that they are a progressive metal band at heart. Great demo and upload.

Taramis' Queen of Thieves is brilliant slightly-progressive power metal in the vein of Slauter Xstroyes. Probably my favorite band from Australia. EDIT: Someone mentioned Ala Drama in a previous progressive metal topic on this forum, and they are quite good too. Speedy high-vocalled prog/power, and ...

Agreed on Fates Warning. Aside from their last album they have had a pretty consistent career, and especially for a progressive metal band. I think that Coroner progressed their sound with every album up to their (half-compilation, half-new) S/T. Actually, it's a shame that they couldn't hold it tog...

Tension's Breaking Point? They came from the same scene and era, had very similar vocalists, and even had a song titled Wrecking Crew (which predates the Overkill one). They're more speed/power based, but the influence is still very present.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace... Polaris the opening riff. Mystrez - Inevitable Alterations the riff set right after the opening of the song. Both of these are oh, so similar and both albums were released the SAME YEAR. Who did it first? Child Saint, in 1988. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpNjELfvQJ...

Re: Most Brutal release of the year...

1980 - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (not all that brutal, but Di'Anno was pretty gruff by '80 standards and songs like Transylvania had an influence on early thrash) 1981 - Venom - Welcome to Hell 1982 - Venom - Black Metal 1983 - Slayer - Show No Mercy (or Death's Death By Metal including demos) 1984 ...
