Re: "Hidden" Epic Metal tracks?

Interesting topic but there's the problem with 'made up' genres. What might be 'Epic Metal' to someone might not be to you & vice-versa. Yeah but this is always the case. God did not decide power metal or death metal existed. They exist because people recognize common elements in certain bands ...

Re: "Hidden" Epic Metal tracks?

@Nonseinormale65: As for your suggestions, while I love Asia (both records) and can see the crossover appeal for fans of say Legend and Alkana I don't really think of it as Epic Metal, it's not really those kinds of riffs or arcane atmosphere. Same must be said for the White Wolf track. The Bride an...

https://youtu.be/2R0bWDrXAbc?si=RgY1oWKKUEkwmMv0 Thanks Hank! I actually don't think I've really listened to any Tull past Heavy Horses but this was really cool and I see where you're getting at! I absolutely think "Broadsword" applies as well! Sent me on a bit of a journey. https://youtu...

Re: "Hidden" Epic Metal tracks?

Of course it is a musical genre. Anything is a musical genre if you want it to be, they're all made up! It's as valid or invalid as any other. It's such a bizarre thing that people never say this about Epic Doom Metal...

Re: "Hidden" Epic Metal tracks?

Yeah! Those two are great examples! Along with Trapeze's "Jury" I agree Caesar LXXI is the start of the genre. The superb Finnish Prog group Kalevala has a sound which I think is a real treat for fans of From the Fjords, Full Speed at High Level and and the first 2 Manilla Road records. ht...

"Hidden" Epic Metal tracks?

I've been enjoying the Epic Metal tracks of Belantara (thank you so much Dan for introducing me to the Malay/Singapore scene!) and absolutely astounded by how they nailed the sound. So I was wondering what other True Epic Heavy Metal gems are hidden in other albums that really aren't "epic"...

Re: Bands musically similar to first Voivod album

Broken Bones is a good answer, since that is a core influence for the Voivod lads. Droid and Holocaust both rule but they clearly take influence from the post Killing Technology albums, not the filthy punk metal of the first 2. The album I actually think comes closest to the crusty sound of War &...

Re: Some PROTO-DEATH METAL bands in the lines of old Kreator, old Dark Angel

I mean you have your obvious other big names: Sepultura, Possessed but I assume you're familiar. Protector-ish. Bands with a Celtic Frost-influence. Slaughter, Post-Mortem, Excruciation, early Necrophagia, Cerebral Fix, Messiah. Kreator-ish. Sepultura/Slayer-schooled. Merciless, Blood Feast, Torture...

Re: Lesser know 80's Doom...

Long time no post for me. Really enjoyed all the new features and reviews. Excellent job dAn and company! Stuff I don't think I've seen in the reviews/aren't tagged as doom Mighty Sphincter - Ghost Walking EP (Is Deathrock but most of it has more in common with Black Hole, Dwarr Mezmerist IMO) Mana ...

Re: Same Riff??? (Riff-Off)

Been on a total old school Black Metal binge and I was checking out the Amon demos when I stumbled on what sounds eerily like this famous Thorns/Mayhem riff. I don't think many people outside of Norway had heard the Thorns demos so this is quite odd. https://youtu.be/aeNvnPj1BwY?t=375 Amon (Cze) - N...

Re: Crap Song Of The Day

Shameful and beyond crap. Impale them on the horns of death. I was holding out some hope for that having the possibility of being a decent film somehow. But wow that is about the crassest way possible to market the film. Also if that's the look they're going for they'...

Re: Metal on camelback!

While Black Contract is fucking awesome and might just be the most underrated Heavy Metal song ever I assume you meant to link to Stolen Salvation Dan? Obviously we have Prime Offenders ''Powerslave'' and ''Curse of the Pharaos'' as well as just plain ''Egypt'' by Mercyful Fate Heh, I've actually ha...

Re: First ever interview with Sorcery {sinister soldiers]!

Thanks a lot for sharing! Long been a fan of the album, It's much superior to the follow up. Only question i felt missing was how they reacted to another band called Sorcery ( the Stunt Rock band) releasing another proto-metal/hard rock album in the same year.
