Band-info:

Tempest from Schweimke in northern Germany’s no man’s land, north of Wolfburg, emerged from another local band called Waterproof. Basically Waterproof was just the successor of the band Baracuda, that Thorsten Dierks (vocals) and Mathias Weißbrod (guitar) brought up into being in 1982 together with some friends, but none of them except of Weißbrod knew how to play any instruments. Most of the guys for that reason lost interest quickly, while Dierks and Weißbrod hooked up with local beerdrinker Ingolf Otte, who was willing to learn playing drums and this way the band Waterproof was born. In late December 1982 the wild bunch decided to do first recordings, so Thorsten Dierks asked his brother Stefan to handle the bass on that session, who would become a steady member of the band, that in 1983 changed name to Tempest. During 1985 the group was joined by Andreas Thiemann (guitar) and never recorded any further material till at last 1987, when their first release ever, an independently produced 12" EP entitled "Rock Cafè” (often refered as”The end of a dream") was recorded in July '87 at the Pro Sound Studio, that featured an interesting kind of slightly progressive Power Metal. The studio also offered Tempest to take care of the vinyl pressing, so 981 copies was made of that EP, that was entirely financed by the band itself. Due to an advertisement of the D&S label, searching for underground bands to join their compilations, Tempest contributed the track "Control the world" to their “German Metal Fighters 2” sampler. Later on drummer Ingolf Otte left still in 1988, forcing Thorsten Dierks to jump behind the drumkit, while a female singer named Birgit was hired instead. Just 6 months later Mathias Weißbrod ran away as well and after another half a year Birgit went off too. At that time in 1989 Tempest consisted only of Thorsten Dierks (vocals, drums), Stefan Dierks (bass) and Andreas Thiemann (guitar). This line up recorded the 2 trax “Get your motivation” and “Two sides of war” for another D&S compilation with the title "The Best Of German Metal Newcomer” in 1990, as well a bit shortly afterwards the “Untamed” Demo, that was mainly meant for promotional purposes and sent to record companies. Compared to "The end of a dream" 12", Tempest's sound got slightly softer, leaving Power Metal fields and slowed down the speed, to return to their Heavy Metal roots, that in places must be called almost doomy, especially on the "The voice inside" tape from 1992. Inline Music got eager to urge the band into recording a full album at their own costs, which Tempest naturally refused to do. For almost two years the guys existed as a trio until 1992, when at length Thorsten Dierks could fully return to only the microphone since Sven Kling could be found as drummer. With a new guitarist Sebastian Jacobi handling the axe, “The voice inside”, another Demo could be recorded, yet Jacobi left after just a few weeks being part of the team and opened doors for Matthias Lenz, who’d stay in for another year and a half. Tempest eventually started recordings for their album “Heavy Metal” around 1993 then, not knowing it would take the lads about 3 years to finish the whole procedure. Shortly before the sessions was about to start Sven Kling quit and Holger Marwede came instead. He’s played all drum parts on the album btw., that was recorded with the line up featuring Stefan (bass) and Thorsten Diercks (vocals) as well as Andreas Thiemann on guitar, who after recordings being accomplished in 1996, told the guys, that he's going to move to Cologne. In a way the album remained kinda unfinished, since all their money was gone and in the end they just used a sort of rough mix for the CD, that was spread in a low number and as the band claims themselves, wasn’t even released officially at all. A “The X-mas factor” entitled fun CD was released as well in December 2000, only featuring cover versions of German x-mas songs and being their last output so far, since the Diercks brothers formed a new band with the name Seducer in 2001. In 2016 their almost complete discography (novelty Xmas stuff not included, thankfully) was released on a 2CD set by Golden Core Records.
