MEGATHERION (Ita) demo # 1 "Genocide" 1984

Here's the first demo by Italian band MEGATHERION from 1984. found this demo whilst i was looking for something else & had totally forgotten about this band. I don't recall having to tape this for ANYONE back when i was tape trading & had no idea what they sounded like. Starting in 1983 under the monicker of GENOCIDE, they changed their name to MEGATHERION in 1984 & proceeded to record this demo tape. For 1984 , this is a very early example of European Speed/Thrash metal being contemporaries of bands such as Destruction, Kreator, Cyclone etc. But MEGATHERION were more of a speed metal band than thrash & sound like the pre "Bonded by Blood" demo by EXODUS or the demos of German speedsters VIOLENT FORCE. the vocals are sung & are often high-pitched & not snarled or barked like with the Thrash metal bands. Fantastic powerful (not to mention TIGHT) double bass drums & really well-executed guitar leads. All in all, a really great , tight metal demo tape that seems to be totally unavailable online ( & hardly info on the band to be found either). They released another demo in 1986 called "BSM" & a cd in 2009 with the same name, although i think this just maybe a reissue of that demo. I haven't heard what they sounded like under their GENOCIDE name either, but i'm guessing it won't be very far off what they sounded like here (although maybe a tad slower). 4 tracks in 20 minutes, Ripped, restored & mastered from a 31 year old cassette tape & it came out great, powerful & clear.

Just got this message from one of the former members of Megatherion...

"This was not supposed to be a real demo but a sort of advance for italian fanzines and labels (hand delivered), never intentionally tape-traded o sold via mail. The band changed name in the same period of the demo (in 1984 there were already too many "Genocide" around) and the group was a few months older.
The exact titles are: 1. Beast of Genocide 2. Dead men attack ! 3. Tragical dawn 4. Metal destroys.
Lyrics were generic and not always correct, but at the time we were all 17-16 years old, go figure it out. You're correct, the BSM cd is the demo reissue plus 2 live tracks. Thanks for your interest and compliments for the very good job."
