Retrospect/Retroactive Records: which are CDr?

Post by demophil »

I have a question for you all.
I am searching for a lot of releases made by Retrospect Records (although most of them are the shabbiest metal ever produced) but I don't know which one of the following is a silver printed/factory pressed CD or a CD-r

Some of them are listed on Discogs and I deleted them from my list (I'm not interested in CDr) but I guess many others are listed as real CD but I am quite sure there are many many others which aren't real silver pressed CD

Which one is 100% silver pressed/factory pressed?

I have Alias"Same" and Pandemonium "Heavy metal soldiers",both are factory pressed cds,I guess most are.
Pandemonium also has a nice booklet.

Death Mask: Split the atom is on silver cd. The booklet is a bit too large for the case though which makes it wavy.
The Messiah reissues are also not cdrs.

Good, I deleted Alias, Pandemonium and Messiah from the list (I deleted also the other CDs of such bands, as I guess they also are factory pressed).

I suppose that most (if not all) CDs on Retroactive and many on Retrothrash (except for Entice and Poynt Blankk as it seems) should be factory pressed/silver cds.

I have more doubts on the Retrospect releases....I know for sure many of them are pro CDr. But...which are the others from this list?

I believe most of the Retrospect CDs are silver, though some have other issues like using an mp3 source.
All the odd sublables like Time Warp, Evil Eye etc, those are 100% CD-R, and 100% bootlegs.

Here on Discogs a lot of releases (at least in the first page and a few more in the second and third page too) are listed as CDr.
Most of them seem to be released between 2005 and 2007 but there are other examples also in most recent years.
The highest release listed there as made in 2015 is listed as a CDr too

http://www.discogs.com/label/79704-Retrospect-Records

But probably there are much more which were not specified by the submitters, for various reasons.

The user "hairmetalheaven" is the guy who listed all the cdr version. So I presume the other releases listed as silver printed CD by hairmetalheaven are with great chance "real" silver printed/factory pressed CD.
All the other submissions made by different submitter than hairmetalheaven are - of course - dubious as I've seen a lot of pro CDr on Discogs aren't listed for what they really are, probably for mistake, ignorance or simply for convenience.

Mistrusting as I am, I don't believe silver vs CD-R until I see proper scans. I cannot find a proper scan for any of the CDr marked titles. Most also have really dubious images submitted.

But Retrospect may have made more CD-Rs than I expected.

I made a further cut to the list and I excluded:

1) The submission by "hairmetalheaven" who seems quite accurate in listing which is cdr and which is a silver pressed cd. So, with a good percentage of accurate information we can exclude his submission.
2) Those who have a matrix/runout code

I have left only the releases not submitted by harimetalheaven, those with no information about matrix/runout and - of course - those which are not listed at all on Discogs. It becomes shorter but still too long

Beware, some cdrs do have matrix codes. Emerald - Armed for Battle and Banshee - Race Against Time for instance are cdrs and have some.

There is hours and hours of reading over at Heavy Harmonies revolving around Sam and his *gulp* record label and the not so above board business practices he keeps. He does release a LOT of unheard of music, but be cautious and do your homework.

I have many Retrospect releases some CDR some not but even some of the silver releases are very poor quality with single one sided front insert and cockeyed printing.

I had the Malisha CD. I remember it looking dodgy so I sold it. I can't remember if it was a CDR. But a sticker said only 100 made.

Most of the Christian Metal titles you have listed here are not on the Retrospect label. Retroactive is a completely different non-affiliated label and all their releases are silver pressed and legally licensed.

The last part of your statement is NOT true. Some of these CD's are legally licensed, but not all. He's also producing CD's that he does not have the rights for. You mainly find them by watching the cheap/spartan layout that he just took off the demo booklets.
If a band complains about the bootleg he just sends them a backdated contract. THEN it's legally licensed. But I don't wanna know how many bands do not know about his dubious activities ...
It's not easy to be the Antichrist ...
