Stone Vengeance HELP!

Post by jnfernal »

Hello!

I just downloaded a couple of tapes by Stone Vengeance, great fast thrash by 3 cool black californian dudes, very great!

As usual confusion reigns supreme at the metal-archives page

I am trying to fix the complete discohraphy and a sort of order but I couldn't find many info

Seems that there are 2 rehearsal-demos recorded in 1985

1)one should be the "The Wrath Cometh" that has the following tracklist:

-Stone vengeance
-Time is at hand
-The great controversy
-The persecution

2) The second rehearsal session recorded in 1985 should be the one that appears on the side B of "Here lies...stone vengeance" Lp (aka "Demo 1987"):

-Long Live Stone Vengeance 04:11
-To Kill Evil 06:07
-Time is at Hand 06:20
-Pain 06:38
-The Great Controversy 05:27

In an interview they talk about a rehearsal tape given to Lars Ulrich...I guess it's one of the above mentioned.

-As we've seen, the so called "Demo 1987" is consisting of a part recorded in 1987 and a second part recorded in 1985.
It has been reprinted on vinyl the same year with the title "Here lies...stone vengeance" and in 1990 - again on tape with the title (given to metal-archives ?) Ep 1990. They're all the same thing as far as I know.
Unfortunately I do not have any rip of any of these 3 different editions to compare them and to compare them with other recordings available.

-The "To kill evil" Demo is marked as recorded in 1986 (Demo 03...so I guess that the "The wrath comet" Demo 1985 is Demo 02 and the B-Side of "Here lies/Demo 1987" is Demo 01) but in an interview the singer says it was recorded later, around 1990.....
here's part of this interview:

Cardona: For clarification's sake, what's the difference between
the material from the self-titled cassette demo
(what would later become "To Kill Evil") and what comprises the
"Here Lies…STONE VENGEANCE" vinyl?
Is the vinyl ever going to be re-released?

Michael: Rob Preston of Doomed Planet Records would have to answer
any questions about a re-release.
"To Kill Evil" was recorded later around 1990.
"Here Lies…" was recorded in 1986, on 2-inch analog tape by David Denny
of THE STEVE MILLER BAND, when he had a studio in San Francisco.
Side-B was one of our rehearsal demo tapes from 1985.

Then...assuming that the "Ep 1990" is just a new release on tape of the Demo 1987/Here Lies Lp 1987, some years ago appeared a CD compilation called "To kill evil"

As usual the Metal-Archives says there are new tracks and a generic collection of demo songs recorded in the 80's. For sure 2 of the 4 bonus tracks were recorded at the time of the "To kill evil" original demo but never included on it.

But...what does the "To kill evil" CD actually cointan?
It seems it gathers both the "To kill evil" sessions + the "Here lies..." Lp/Tape. Unfortunately I do not have the "Here lies/Demo 1987" tape to compare the recordings with the ones on the CD

Strangely enough it shouldn't contain the "The Wrath Cometh" Demo 1985 as it miss the song "Stone vengeance"....
The song "Stone vengeance" on the "Wrath Cometh" Demo isn't the "Long live Stone Vengeance" song that appears on the CD and (possibly) on the Tape/lp 1987...titles are different and even lenght is different (5.31 on "Wrath Cometh" demo and 4.11 on CD and Tape/Lp)...

so...before loosing my head....is there anybody who can make a clear and definitive point on the Stone Vengeance discography?

I hope people who post information on the metal-archives should pay some attention before generating confusion

They're cool and fast...christian good guys but they do not hide their sympathy for the boobed pornstar Minka :D

Have these demo's been released by the band back in the day? If not, they don't belong on M-A.

i have the stone vengeance LP at home. musically its all over the map and really clunky in places, but worth it for the novelty factor of being a christian speed metal band that not only doesn't totally blow, but is made up of hard looking black dudes. i think the m-a tracklist for it swapped the sides. when i get home i'll check it and post for sure. its definitely two recordings and not one demo - i'm pretty sure the A-side is the demo "to kill evil" and the b-side is another demo (from 86? 87?), but my memory is awful

Absolutely not the same recordings. "To Kill Evil" cd is studio recording 1990 -1998. The "here Lies" is the Demo + rehearsal demo. Buy the lp, it shouldn't be too hard to find if you want it, and check it out.
more info on the vinyl release is documented on my website:
