Does Condition Effect Price?????

Post by Glockose »

Just a question I have for the masses
How much does condition effect price? for you..

If a record is not that rare and sells for say $50 Mint (Sealed)(very good record) you would want. Lets say for this experiment Wikka or Unleashed
How much do you think it should sell for if the following

1) Cover has seam split / Disc Mint?
2) Cover has sticker tear / Disc Mint?
3) Cover has cutout hole/saw mark/cut corner / Disk Mint? Sealed
4) Cover have ring ware / Disc mint?
5) Cover Mint / Disc has paper marks not effecting play but look bad?
6) Cover Mint / Disc has scratches, no skips but makes noise in quit parts?

Maybe you think none of these should effect the price and the record should still sell for $50

I would buy WIKKA for $50,- when:
2) Cover has sticker tear / Disc Mint
4) Cover have ring ware / Disc mint
5) Cover Mint / Disc has paper marks not effecting play but look bad
As long as the disc plays without too many noise I have no problem. I HATE drill holes and cut corners, but I have no problem with sticker tears (not too big though), weird, isn't it :?

2) Cover has sticker tear / Disc Mint? 40-50
3) Cover has cutout hole/saw mark/cut corner / Disk Mint? Sealed 25
4) Cover have ring ware / Disc mint? 35-50
5) Cover Mint / Disc has paper marks not effecting play but look bad? 30 -50
6) Cover Mint / Disc has scratches, no skips but makes noise in quit parts? 30 -50

2)40
3)20 (ruins the cover)
4)25-30
5)40
6)20 (this is quite important too)

What I get from this is CUTOUTS are the Devil and the next worst thing would be a seam split.

And Covers mean more to you then the disc

...and when it has serious water damage (like the last Militia auction on ebay), I would say also < 20

I think if a record is something completely amazing, rare, and worth it (awesome music, awesome art, lyrics, etc) like Legend or The Mezmerist or Militia then Ill take it in almost any condition as long as the record plays and everything is still visible (words, pictures, etc). For example I wouldnt buy a copy of (insert random) if the back cover was torn in half and water damaged, unless it was really cheap (like $20 or less). However, most ringwear, some seamsplits, etc have almost no effect on how much I want a record. Actually, if it means getting an awesome, and rare record at a good price Id rather get it with minor wear then not get it at all.

Also, I usally chose to buy records that arent sealed because they cost less and I always feel like shit about opening some incredibly rare sealed copy of something (that would be one less sealed copy of the few that still exist).

If I really wanted Wikka or Unleashed, and they normally sold for $50, id pay $50 if it had some minor ringwear, or extremely minor wear around the edges (sealed or not). Id pay $45 if it had a small sticker tear, $30-$40 if it had a significantly large sticker tear (depending on where it is and how big it is). Id probably pay $40 for a minor seam split or $20-$30 for a worse seam split. I probably would pay more then $35 for a cut corner (I hate cut corners!). Cutout holes and saw marks wouldnt effect it that much (probably $40 or so).

If the cover is mint and the disc has minor wear that doesnt effect play then it really wont make me pay any less for it. However, if the disc plays and looks like shit (noise, skipping, etc) I most likely wouldnt buy it at all.

It depends on which record we're dealing with (its rarity, how often it appears etc) and on each buyer. Judging from that last MILITIA ebay auction, some people don't give a damn about LP condition. Personally, i am very careful on this issue, especially when and if i'm ready to fork out a respectable amount of money.

Edit: To answer your question:

Wikka EP:

1) Cover has seam split / Disc Mint? 40-45
2) Cover has sticker tear / Disc Mint? 30-35
3) Cover has cutout hole/saw mark/cut corner / Disk Mint? Sealed 35-40
4) Cover have ring ware / Disc mint? 35-40
5) Cover Mint / Disc has paper marks not effecting play but look bad? 30-35
6) Cover Mint / Disc has scratches, no skips but makes noise in quit parts? 25-30

It often occurs that sealed records are warped due to wrong storage. The baddest example is my Dark Knight LP which I can use as a fruit saucer.

Seam-splits, cut-outs or bullet holes are all big no no's for me!

I always ask the seller to remove the vinyl from the jacket before posting, but a lot just dont listen or dont read the request & 9 times out of 10 the vinyl shows up damaged in some way :(

Sometimes wear to the cover can add charm, especially if it's really rare...

Condition of the vinyl is important too as long as it sounds ok when it plays, and depends on how much i paid for it

So how much could I get for Unleashed MLP, which would've been in a mint condition, if it wasn't for those promo marks on covers and LP labels?

Musicstack has two for sale for $77 & $116, and there's one for $77 at Gemm too.

Well as a dealer I would not have bought it for $2 in a store like that as I wouldn't think anyone would want it and I wouldn't even try to sell it.

As some folks here can tell you I have a few boxes of very RARE records in this kind of condition and they are always free for the asking

BUT you might just fined someone who doesn't care or who has a Mint cover and no record and sell it for $100+

Thats what is great about all of this

Good question! I know certain defects bother some people more than others.
I'd say....
1) close to $50 (seam splits don't bother me unless there's alot of fraying)
2) about half price. I really don't like sticker tears; I consider that major damage.
3) $45-50; I'm not as put-off by cut-out marks as many folks apparently are
4) maybe 35-40 (about 2/3)
5) maybe 35-40 (akin to ringwear IMO)
6) 35ish

I think condition has to factor into price. Main condition concerns:
1- does the album play without skipping or hanging?
2- does it play without noticeable bkgd noise?
3- are the cover and labels intact (no rips/tears) and not damaged/defaced (water damage, handwriting)?
If it passes all these checks, I'll be happy with it.

Along these lines, did anyone see the copy of Big Daisy that sold on ebay a few days ago? The picture sleeve was really trashed; grease stains, a xhunk missing from it, etc, and the item still brought about $300. It's a rare and good single, but that's alot to pay for a picture sleeve in bona-fide Poor condition

Ther are people who only wants MINT copies or even better, sealed ones !
And they even do not open them !!!

Personnaly i am happy with an EX or even a VG condition.
But of cours it should cost less. I would say 75% for EX and 50% for VG.

Anyway, i start to prefer EX copies than MINT or SEALED ones !
The sealed ones always look like Bootlegs !

Anyone knows someting about the MESSIAH and the ION BRITTON copies that showed up lately ?????
