I know exactly what you mean, i'm now glad i couldn't afford one when the idea really appealed to me.
At one time not that long ago the tattoo was a really divisive thing.
You would struggle to get most jobs if you had one, it was a real "us & them" statement.
Now everyone of a certain age has at least one it seems.
I got talking to a young guy at a gig a couple of years ago about the excellently rendered '50s style pin-up girl tatt he had on his forearm.
It turned out his mum had paid for it as his 18th birthday present!#
That made me feel old i tell you.

I never looked at this thread before, one of the best tattoos ever, nice inkwork. I own the preliminary original art for this Whelan masterpiece:

Wow!
That's just about the coolest piece of memorabilia/art ever.
How on earth did that end up in your possession?
I hope you have it safe in a vault protected by Krakens or Minotaurs or something or Nightsblood will be awf with it.

I've owned this for about 20 years. I paid a lot for it back then. Luckily the comic art dealer Albert Moy let me make payments for 6 months or so to get it, he is still dealing art so I guess he knows what he is doing :) It hangs here in my living room like it always has...

I'm very envious.
Even if it didn't have the Cirith Ungol connection it'd still be a very cool piece to have.
It's so beautifully rendered, any idea what materials were used in it's creation?

As it has occurred with many other things, having a tattoo has lost its meaning as well. For many people there's no real, deep reason why they ink themselves. They just do it because everyone else does it and because it makes you look cool and have the illusion of being a true individual.
