Greek Heavy Metal?

Post by Vans McBurger »

I'm visiting Greece for a festival this Summer and realised I'm suprisingly ignorant of the metal scene there. I know some of the black metal bands from the 90s of course but as far as more traditional stuff the only one I know well is Macedon Harriers, I've also been checking out Northwind as they're playing the fest I'm going to. Anyone got some reccomendations of good Greek heavy metal old or new?

What genres are you into, to focus my recommendations on?

Ah forgot to mention wrathblade, another one I've been checking out as they're playing the festival. Looking for classic heavy metal really. Just interested in hearing some of the classic Greek bands I've missed. I've also found sarissa this evening who seem cool so far. To try be a bit more specific I love melodic heavy/ early power metal type stuff, omen, gotham city, running wild etc.

Blood Covered : Wrong Direction is an incredible piece of epic Heavy Metal, some amazing songs, often long and great vocals. Gotta love it.

For FLAMES, I'd recommend "Last Prophecy" as a great introduction to the band. Awesome Sodom-type Thrash with an original, almost 'exotic' twist.

...though my fave Greek HM album would probably be the VICE HUMAN debut. Very much a love-or-hate band apparently. At their best I'd describe them as a Greek answer to Gotham City (early)

Such wonderfully crude & noodly riffing! This could be a Helvetets Port-song.

Mistitled, this is "I Long To Kill You Beast". More riff gold!

One of Greek's most underrated:

Darkened Black Thrash filth

...and since you'll see them live, do check up on NORTHWIND, esp the "Mythology" album - another Greek top gem.

Out of all the european countries with more then a handful of bands the greek scene was probably the most mundane and mediocre. Odd, granted how many Metal fans that country has compared to others. A lot of hype and not much that stands above the offerings of other countries.

I guess my suggestions would be Spitfire and Rust.

At the end of the day you aren't missing too much.

You guys tend to forget there was a pretty strong scene in macedonia in the early, mid 90ies. Here are 3 excellent heavy Metal songs from those days :

Reflection: Sire of the Storm 7 inch

Powerdrop : album and 7inch "Proud of our shit" :

Night Shadows :

(and once again that Blood Covered full length from 2000's is awesome).

Music wise this is a real hidden gem of original, epic and melodic Metal, but those vocals can get very annoying. A must-check-out album nevertheless.

Kinda agree with Avenger here. Among the Greek bands I've checked out, most are technically proficient, but they always suffer form the same couple of problems. The main thing is they always seem to lack that extra 'fire' that is possessed by the American and western European bands they try so very hard to emulate. They thus come across as s rather 'bland' version of some other band, at which point I'd rather just listen to the original, better version :-) There are exceptions of course, but I tend to walk away from Greek bands thinking, "well, they play pretty good, but they're just not as good as _____" (fill in the name of whatever band they're most similar to).

The big exception for me is the CROSSWIND demos (Opposing Forces/Beyond). While they are very similar to a lot of other power/speed bands, the demos actually do capture the same aggressive punch as their predecessors (think Steel Assassin meets the fastest Gamma Ray material).
