Scotland! Band recommendation

Post by apollo.ra »

I'm going to visit Glasgow for a week during next month, and I'll probably visit Edinburgh.

Does anyone know any vinyl or 2nd hand record stores there?

Also are there any worth-checking Scottish bands from the NWOBHM?

Cheerz!

Chaser and Holocaust are the only bands that come to mind for me. The Scottish scene was pretty small from what I gather.

Recommendation threads belong in "Into Battle"! Moved. /Mod

Not bad. I never heard the single tracks before. From what I remember of the full-lengths they were quite average.

I don't know that it was all that small a scene, although a lot of the Scottish bands didn't manage to release records so i can see how you'd get that impression.
Here's a little known Scottish guilty pleasure from the early NWoBHM era, ROUGH JUSTICE (from The Hebrides, a tiny archipeligo of islands off the Scottish West coast), from back in 1979:

It's the A-Side of their lone single "Black Knight (A Gothic Legend)".
There's a charming naiveté to it that i very much enjoy, and although not the heaviest thing you'll hear from the NWoBHM era there's something really catchy about it.
That it comes from such a remote location just makes it all the more intriguing.

Yeah, the full lengths are not that exciting, but the first single slays. For some reason it's quite cheap too. I know you're only looking for CDs, I think it's included on a later compilation.

Yes, both sides of that single are on The Neat Records Singles Collection Volume One. I don't think their debut LP should be overlooked though. While much of it is more on the melodic/glam side, it also has some great and heavy Saxon type numbers like "Victims Of The Night" and "Hell Is Beautiful".
