Bands playing covers/ remakes of other bands:

Post by Noisenik »

the best, the worst, the flattest, the weirdest, whatever ...

after a quick brainstorm I reminded myself of the following, more known results:

quite a remake:
VoiVod doing Venom's In Nomine Satanas
VoiVod doing Pink Floyd's The Nile Song

quite memorable:
VoiVod - Astronomy Domine (Pink Floyd)
Venom - Megalomania (Black Sabbath)
Realm - Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles)
Nuclear Assault - Good Times Bad Times (Led Zeppelin)
Slayer - Dissident Agressor (Judas Priest)
Sodom - Iron Fist (Motorhead)
Judas Priest - Green Manalishi (Fleetwood Mac/ Peter Green)
Iron Maiden - Cross-eyed Mary (Jethro Tull)
Iron Maiden - I got the Fire (Montrose) - there's a lot of Montrose in early Maiden me thinks.
Sacred Reich - War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Artillery - Razzamanaz (Nazareth)
Flotsam and Jetsam - Saturday's Night ... (Elton John)
Heathen - Kill the King (Rainbow)
Heathen - Set Me Free (Sweet)
Kreator - Lambs To The Slaughter (Raven)
and I didn't forget Garage Days and Creeping Death ...

rather so so:
Death - Painkiller (Judas Priest)
Exhorder - Sweet Leaf (Black Sabbath)
Anthrax - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (as above)

one of the flattest: Defiance doing "Killers" but it still may be the best track on Void Terra Firma

to resume: the mentioned bands have mostly played songs with more power, i.e. closer to playing than to remaking them.

how about obscure bands?

I can't think of any really obscure covers, but here are a few of my favorites besides the ones you mentioned:

Agony Column - Mississippi Queen (Mountain)
Dead Horse - Rock Lobster (The B-52s)
Lizzy Borden - Don't Touch Me There (The Tubes)
Mantas - Green Manalishi (they actually cover the Judas Priest version)
Sanctuary - White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
Sentinel Beast - Phantom of the Opera (Iron Maiden)
Wrathchild America - Time (Pink Floyd)

Maiden were undisputed masters of "coverage". My 2 top-faves would be "I've Got The Fire" (one of the most energetic live recordings ever) and "King of Twilight" (now that's EPIC!)

Otherwise I'm mostly impressed by Metal bands doing covers of non-metal songs. Steve Sylvester's version of "Heaven on their minds" from the Jesus Christ Superstar score is a top fave - suits his voice and attitude like a Metal glove. IMPALER's take on The Stooge's "Search & Destroy" also springs to mind. A song you could hardly fail with ofcourse..

Indeed, two excellent remakes, esp. Dark Angel's exudes genuine sick feeling.

WIND WRAITH did an amazing cover of Elvis Presleys "Burning Love" on their "The Fortune Teller's Gaze"-CD !
I never thought that this song could work as a Metal Song, but this version is great ! It' also the best Song on this (good) CD !

Nooo! The weakest moment on an otherwise genious record. Actually the original is much better. And darker. "In the Chapel, In the Moonlight" on the other hand - fucking awesome!

wow! well, perhaps it should belong to another thread, but they had it put at the very beginning of the album - always thought why - I think I understand now - it would sound much stranger in the middle of the album(when heard first time). Still like it very much, though. And have to check the original asap.
