Bigfootkit recently posted a live OUTLAWS recording on his excellent blog, which got me in the mood for some southern hard rock fixin's. I realize the southern hard rock genre is only tangentially related to Metal, but I'm curious if folks are like this style, and if so, what bands they enjoy. Having spent most of my life in the southern US, it's a style I enjoy, though not one I've ever delved into very deeply. Still, there's some great guitar heroics to be found in the genre, and I like the penchant for storytelling in the songs.
To get things rolling, here's my short, not-so-informed play list this week:

Outlaws- Live at Reading 1986 (thanks 'Kit!0
Ashbury- Endless Skies
Southern Rock Band- lady killer 7"
Impeccable- live
Axxe- through the night 7"
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Pronounced...

LIONHART ''same'' LP 1977 is the best record I have ever listened in this style (and I have listened most of them!). band is from TEXAS. Other bands from this state you should check are:

STUD ''same'' LP 1975
REVOLVER ''a piece of action'' LP 1980
FOXX ''siren's serenade'' LP 1980

None of which I've heard, or can find much about, and they all seem to be some "ultra-rare" this or that

Point Blank had a lot of mellow stuff but could rock too:

BLACKHORSE are cool indeed and of course BLACKFOOT and POINT BLANK.

I even like bands lthat mixed in some Melodic Rock/AOR like 38 SPECIAL, MOLLY HATCHET, THE OUTLAWS or DOC HOLLIDAY. Well, no wonder, i'm kinda like a southerner too.

A few personal favourites:

BLACKFOOT : Highway Song - Live
RED BUD THUNDER : American Rock'n'Roll
BLACK OAK ARKANSAS : X-Rated
ALAMO : Alamo
DOC HOLLIDAY : Rides Again
HENRY PAUL BAND : Grey Ghost
POINT BLANK : Point Blank
HYDRA : Hydra
CROSSRODE : Crossrode
NITZINGER : Nitzinger
DANNY JOE BROWN : Danny Joe Brown & The DJB Band
BADGE & COMPANY : Badge & Company

Of course, as mentioned elsewhere, SKYNYRD, MOLLY HATCHET, BLACKHORSE, THE OUTLAWS, (early) ZZ TOP & 38 SPECIAL are all great bands too.
On the mellower side of things, ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION, WINTERS BROTHERS BAND, GREAT SOUTHERN, GRINDERSWITCH, ERIC QUINCY TATE and the legendary ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND are all worth hearing as well.

That super-tall NP bass player has a hilarious story about Gene simmons coming up to her backstage and saying straight out, 'I wanna fuck you so bad"....when she was right in the middle of talking to her father who had come to watch her play that night
