Covers of obscure metal songs

Post by Keir »

Before anyone says anything, yes I know there is already a thread about cover songs. I want to discuss something more specific and I think it deserves its own thread.

When a metal band covers a song it generally falls into 1 of 2 categories: the novelty non-metal cover or the "roots of metal" category. The first category can be fun, but I find the second often tiresome. How many different versions of "Kill The King" (or worse, "Born To Be Wild") do we really need? So I find it particularly thrilling when a band covers some forgotten metal gem of olde.

Of course, everyone's opinion of what is obscure (or even what is metal) will differ greatly, but here are some examples of what I'm looking for:

Barry Philip Etches - Would Not Be Seen Dead In Heaven (Witchfynde)
Cauldron - I Confess (Halloween)
Gorgon - Flame Burns On (Axis)
Gorgon - Running Blind (Bashful Alley)
Gorgon - Sheralee (Soldier cover)
Lord Weird Slough Feg - The Wizard's Vengeance (Legend)
Skanners - Full Moon's Eyes (Ostrogoth)
White Skull - Adramelch (Adramelch)

Here's a few off the top of my head.

The Hookers - Sign Of The Wolf (Pentagram), The Mugger (Shock Treatment), Two Wheels (Centurion)

Midnight Chaser - Turn Your Head Around (Tank)

Sabbat - Satan's Seranade (Quartz)

Doomsword - Nadsokor (Cirith Ungol)

Orodruin - Stand Up And Fight (Quartz)

Hands Of Orlac - Sorceress (Angel Witch)

Benediction - Forged In Fire (Anvil)

Battleroar - Isle Of The Dead (Manilla Road)

Sodom - Don't Walk Away (Tank)

Seven Witches - See You In Hell (Grim Reaper), Pounding Metal (Exciter)

Hope this is the kinda thing you were looking for.

A little bit of trivia about this cover for you. In the months before the recording of 'Twilight of the Idols" is when I first met the LWSF guys. I kept mentioning esoteric metal and hard rock to Mike and finally made him a comp tape of some interesting songs. this Legend song was on this tape, Mike liked it and we discussed them covering it, which I thought was a great idea. The lyrics are a little hard to decypher listening to the song so I copied them for him and voila! good times...

Interesting thread, although most of the more obscure cover versions came from newer bands in the last few years:

SOLEMNITY “Wolja I Rasum“ from ARIJA
AXE BATTLER ”Fight The Fire” from WITCH CROSS
ETRUSGRAVE "Colossus of Argil" from DARK QUARTERER
SIGN OF THE JACKAL”Warlord’s Wrath” from BLACK KNIGHT
DECEASED ”Metal Church” from METAL CHURCH
PRAISING EVIL "Black Mass" from EXORCIST
NIGHTMARE "Hooked On Metal" from ACID
SABAT "Satan's Seranade" from QUARTZ
EMERALD "Medieval Steel" from MEDIEVAL STEEL
CATHEDRAL "Rabies" from WITCHFINDER GENERAL
SEVEN WITCHES ”See You In Hell” from GRIM REAPER
BAPHOMET’S BLOOD ” Making Noise and Drinking Beer” from TYRANT (Ger)
ABIGAIL (Jap) doing several BULLDOZER cover, as well as from VOOR and NME

And surely the first MANILLA ROAD cover:
MESSIAH ” Dreams of Eschaton“

Also TORMENTOR from Hungary is still a rather obscure band that nevertheless gets covered a lot.

So it seems i've also discovered the ”From The Fjords” album with your help then, well done.

Forgot a few, TORNIQUET did “The Messiah” from BLOODGOOD, together with their original singer Les Carlsen.

Also NOCTURNAL doing ”Killing Machine” from LIVING DEATH
TEMPLE OF BLOOD ”Deliver Us From Evil” (DEADLY BLESSING)
ETERNAL REIGN ”Ten Seconds In” (BREAKER)

In 1996 MARDUK did ”Sodomize The Dead” and ”Sex With Satan” from PILEDRIVER, but you probably wouldn’t recognzie them.

And not to forget, VOLTAX honoring their heroes MEGATON with the mighty ”Vida Después de la Muerte".

Funeral Circle - Burning a Sinner (Witchfinder General)
Cauldron - Free Country (Witchfinder General)
Skullfist - Angel Witch (""), Attack Attack(?) (Tokyo Blade)
Gatekrashor - Thundersteel (Riot), Evil Invaders (Razor), Victim of States Power (Running Wild)
Striker - Don't Wait for Me (Vicious Rumors) Night of the Vampire, You'll Wish You were Never Born (Grim Reaper)
Hrom - Power and Glory (Chroming Rose) Judas (Helloween)

Most of these covers were done at live gigs, but Funeral Circle, Striker, and Gatekrashor and Hrom have recorded theirs.

Apparently Cauldron has also covered an obscure Rush song from the 70's but I cant place the title

Howie has also leaked that the new Cauldron Born EP will feature a Heavy Load cover, "Singing Swords". Very cool!

Do Grim Reaper really count as obscure when their videos have been screened on MTV?
