I snipped the following comment to make a brief point.

There are all kinds of people in this world and all kinds of labels too. But your statement here is really offensive in a way I don't think you understand. Not all people are scum. Not all labels are scum. Of course some are, but in a world of billions that is to expected.

I'm thinking of a very specific instance in my history of my label. Yes I had a small label. I sold records. I didn't really make any money at it but I enjoyed it for a time. But I made a lot of friends along the way that respect what I did, and that is enough. Anyway this band I'm thinking of, they were really happy that I helped them in my small way. Very happy. So happy didn't forget and I've helped them since my release when I could. I remember the mainman of the band telling me that in all their history no one ever helped them like I did. No I didn't own the rights to the music nor was that my intent. And you can say, "no seller helped the scene anyway"? Well I never cared for any "scene", but I do care about this band and enjoyed helped them, it was worth it, even for little money. I did rescue their past from oblivion. So think just a little harder before making accusations like this.

Also, as has been said repeatedly, no one is asking for anyone to give them a record for free, fuck's sake why keep saying that!? Also like has been said it's not about thinking you HAVE to let people listen, but people can ask.

Last year I bought the SHORES OF EVENING LP, it's crap non-metal with a very promising cover, what I did when I got it was rip it and put it up here so others could listen, as far as I know my rip was the first one done, now it's up on Strappado etc., whatever. What I didn't do is try hype it up or keep it hidden in hopes of making a profit. Music is the thing that counts, fuck your business attitude.
Dude...I get it....believe me.

"Fuck your business attitude" pretty much sums it up.

I "get" that.....I just don't agree with it.

Without people on the "business" side there would be very little music in the world to listen to.

As far as coming to my house and me playing a rare record for you....HELL YES I'll do that....because if you're at my house, you're my friend.

Will I play it for nameless, faceless people around the world who I will never meet or know. NOPE......nor will I invite those people to my home.

I've turned more people on to unknown, unreleased and otherwise impossible to hear music than you could ever imagine...I just don't do it as a Charity.

Is it any wonder my attitude toward you is hostile when you call everyone who's ever asked to hear some music 'for free' obnoxious whiners?

Rob,I am fully aware of what I'm talking about. You are right in what you said, but you're talking about a label you made and not you as a seller. If there are exceptions,I can't see why you have to put yourself out of them. But it's a re-issue you are talking about and not a band long lost and forgotten from whom you bought the stuff for peanuts and made money out of it.All I do is liken them to real estate agents.

Cochino wrote:Also, since you seem to hate free things so much, would you do a dub or a rip if we give you some money?
The answer to this is NO...because I conduct my business legally and with integrity. This is not my music to duplicate and distribute.

Tell you what....want to know something about me....since 1988 I have run the Rockadelic label.....I have released 60+ records and am proud that if you search the internet you will not find a single example where I have ever ripped anyone off, not been fair with the artists I worked with or had any shady or negative business dealings....to do this for 20+ and maintain that kind of reputation means I must be doing something right....

I joined this discussion based on an email my brother received and was posted in this thread....that email and the attitude within it is what all of my posts have been directed towards.....those of you who want to make it about something other than that are wasting their time.

I have no time for such immature and small minds that hate capitalism, business or making a profit.....I've been doing this since before many of you were born and I doubt there is anything you can teach me about record collecting or the music business.

But keep trying...your broken english, half-ass logic and ignorant youthful enthusiasm is entertaining.....in a sad kinda way.

Now, let's see if you can answer the two direct questions I've made to you and you never replied. If you can easily share rare music with somebody who wants to listen to it because he can't afford it or wants to check it out before spending big bucks on it, why won't you do it? And the second question, since you're against charity and all that socialist stuff, would you accept money in exchange for an upload or a dub?

Let's get this clear.....those who ask for music and then call people selfish assholes if they don't oblige are obnoxious whiners...if the shoe fits, wear it...if not, ignore it.

I didn't, yet you directed that at me too. Getting into personal insults has been the worst part of this thread, there are still several legit questions that haven't had any response.

I've answered your second question very directly in an above recent post.
No...I will not dub/copy music I don't own the rights to for cash money.

As far as your first question goes...if you are wanting to buy a record from me I will play it for you...in person....over the phone....via divshare partial clips......every time.......

If you are my friend at my home and want to hear it...I will play it for you...every time.

What I WON'T do is post up clips for anyone/everyone in the world to hear, for a variety of reasons, with the best one being I DON'T OWN THE RIGHTS TO DUPLICATE AND/OR DISTRIBUTE THAT MUSIC LEGALLY.

Trigger:
I found offense because you made a gross generalization that doesn't hold up under scrutiny. I just made my point ,but my point applies to many many others. I find it interesting that you called my release a "reissue" but it wasn't. This seems to be a common misconception I've seen over and over.

I've sold plenty of stuff for a lot of money that I found for "peanuts". What are peanuts, I don't think they have a common value? Is to buy something for $100 and sell it for $200 peanuts? Not really, that is a standard markup. To sell for less is charity, but the music world has a lot of charity in it.

Here is a funny story for you. Maybe you won't find humour in it but it is there. I was telling a book publisher friend of mine that a lot of the deluxe releases coming out these days cost $15+ a unit to sell and many of the labels only charge say $25-$30 retail for that same releases. He couldn't believe it. His comment was if your unit cost is $15, your retail has to be at least $60 or higher. Why is this true? Because a standard distributor discount is 40% to 50%. most product of any kind sells to a distributor (these are the money making scum). And you have overhead like rent and employees, taxes, etc, etc. somewhere in there has to be a little profit or you fail and close up shop. Look around you at the world and the tough economic times, and can you see any correlation? Anyway many of these labels do it not out of profit, but many do so for profit. I respect those that succeed, and those that also just do it because of passion. Or both when possible.

the book world is 10x more cutthroat than the record game, especially when you get into e-books and journals, which bring the publishers lots more money and unfairly (imo anyways) cheat libraries and academics

If you can layout those legit questions in a succinct manner I will be happy to answer them directly if I know the answer.

I have no problem with a seller selling,I have no problem with a label selling for profit(of course it is for profit, who said no?),I have a problem with the attitude "I paid a band whose album was released 20 years ago and bought the copies, most of the times 5$ per copy(am I wrong?) and I sell it for 100$ each so I help the band" and lots of other issues showcased in this thread.Hope that makes it clear but I don't fight business just to fight against it,I fight business who makes money and want to get all of it.This is called competetion, this is in life too.Business sells at a price,I choose the best price for me.
