South Korean metal recommendations

Post by Warepire »

We have threads for Russia, Italy etc, and I see that not many are well traveled in the Korean scene so it's time for a topic.

There are several bands hailing from Korea, some more known than others. A few "big shots" among the mp3 blogs are:
Armageddon
Stranger
Dionysus
Black Hole
Baekdoosan

But there are also other bands like:
Sinawe
Black Syndrome
Avalanche
Cratia [There guys are more towards Glam Rock though]

And probably even more bands that I cannot remember right now.

Most bands in this list are a tad Neo-Classical, probably inspired from guys in the far east (Japan), but they are also a little softer than other countries with their a little more rock-inspired play style. The Korean scene also had a slow take-off, they did not really go big until the late 80s and early 90s.

The Korean scene is not for everyone and I am far from the perfect person to ask about it...

Here are however some albums I think are noteworthy from this scene (from the ones I know):
Armageddon - Tears of a King Bird [don't have a sample, find a download]
Baekdoosan - III YouTube sample
Black Hole - City Life History YouTube Sample
Dionysus - Legend of Darkness YouTube sample
Sinawe - Four YouTube sample

Dionysus is actually not bad, but it's a just a TAD too wanky for my tastes, not a fan of the sweep picking which always makes me shudder, but the more simple melodies are really awesome!!

EDIT:

The Sinawe is actually kicking my ass!!!!!!

ARMAGEDDON and STRANGER are quite good and also the first FOREIGN LEGION. they remind me a bit of early GRAVE DIGGER, but with better vocals, check them out if you like, also not as hard to find like the two aforementioned bands.
Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst

BAEKDOOSAN - King od Rock'n Roll is very good
The 2 others from them are bad !
DIONYSUS are very good neoclassical Metal
EVE are a female band and very nice, between Hard Rock and Metal, the lead singer is often out of tune but it's a charming melodic record.
If interrested you can look at my list here ;

I quite like DASH from the Friday Afternoon comp. Did they ever release anything else?

I only have Black Hole and Black Syndrome and I enjoyed both. Nothing exceptional but a nice listen in between.

Bumping an old thread: I'm going to Seoul next month and was wondering if anyone is in contact with people over there. Any information on whether it would be worth to set aside a day for record hunting?

Zero-G's debut "Exciting game" is nice nasty Metal with little US Glam edge, vocals like Cinderella, exceptional if you compare to other korean albums. Museros and Small Sky are musicwise nice too but especially Museros had a terrible vocalist who killed the whole album. Basically it's similar to japanese Metal albums. Therefore the 2 Dyonisus LP's are quite outstanding despite the guitar wankery. A real recomendation is the Friday Afternoon II Compi. There are tons of interesting bands that mostly never released any further LP.
Why Cratia is labelled Glam Rock I really don't understand, it's Heavy Metal, sure has a little Glam edge but the Metal influence is taking the upper hand. I prefer this any time over most Sinawe or Baekdoosan albums.
It's not easy to be the Antichrist ...

Your photos are missing (besides LPs by already included bands):
Stranger - Sailing Out, that one is in my opinion fairly nice.
Rock N Roll Korea, it's a quite nice compilation.
I am fairly sure N.Ex.T - Home came out on Vinyl (might be wrong on this).
Eve's LP, very nice melodic rock of an all female band.
